jazz: You seem to do a bit of running on the beach without shoes... does this make your calves or planter fascia tight?

Tooms: No, quite the opposite, without the artificial raised heel of all running shoes, my calves get a nice stretch running on the sand (as the heel drops lower). I am however, very used to barefoot running on the sand. Those unused to sand running really struggle for the first few sessions with extra-sore Achillies, sore toes and plantar fascia as they are forced through ranges of motion they are usually sheltered from.

I have seen many such people give-up on barefoot running after a bad first run, but I have seen more perservere through half a dozen careful sand runs and after that are perfectly ok. In October my first real run at pace after coming out of hospital in August was a barefoot sand race up at Sorrento over 8km (idiot!!). A week later I was still unable to run pain free as my calves were so badly bruised!!! I was amazed just how painful I was over the first few days post run. Mind you, much of it was firm sand which is much worse.
