This year's Flying Pig "A" meet on April 5-7 in Bloomington, Indiana, will once again include the Eastern States Interscholastic Orienteering Championships. All students are invited! This year the Pig will include a Friday afternoon sprint on the Indiana University Campus, Long distance race at Yellowwood State Forest, and Middle distance race at Ransburg Scout Reservation in Hoosier National Forest. Registration will open sometime in January.

Exciting! We'd like to stay someplace there are er attractions, as opposed to freewayexitland. I surprisingly didn't spend much time in Bloomington. Are there decent accommodation options near IU, and things to do, or would we be better off in Indianapolis and driving?

Stay in Bloomington! Great to see an A meet in ICO land :-)

Any chance we'll be near any of the shooting locations of 'Breaking Away'? The quarry?
Dec 19, 2012 9:17 PM #
Orunner:
All but the quarry.

Just about everything was shot nearby. Some of the quarry scenes where reportedly shot near Elberton, GA. That’s Navigator Cup land, not far from Richard B Russell State Park.

Although Breaking Away was largely filmed where The Flinging Pig will be held, it will have been 34 years. A couple things might have changed. Maybe we can find a spot or two. :-)

The time trials for Little 500 ( the bicycle race featured in Breaking Away) are being held on Friday. You should be able to visit the Little 5 stadium and see some of the action if you arrive early on Friday. The actual race is a couple weeks after the Pig.

When I was in grad school at IU, I rode a lot on the hilly rural roads outside of town, and also hiked back to some of the quarries that were popular with townies and students. Pretty much all the quarries are private, heavily posted, and vigorously patrolled. I'll see if I can find out if there are one or two where public could get close enough to get a look without bring harassed by litigation-paranoid land owners.

Oh, and if you have a good bike with a big enough gear, catching the draft of a semi gearing up from the traffic lights on highway 37 is really, really a blast! Dangerous as heck, but quite a rush!

mikeminium:
If I recall correctly, the scene with the semi was filmed a few miles north of Bloomington, coming southbound out of the lights at Martinsville. If the weather is right and the semi does not accelerate too quickly, this is the place to pick up a heck of a draft.

Some of the scenes with the race with the Italian riders were filmed in or near Morgan Monroe State Forest just north of town (where a recent episode of "Finding Bigfoot" was also filmed). There are some great roads for riding with some wicked grades with names like Mount Tabor and Greasy Creek. There are a couple thrilling downhills where local riders routinely hit speeds of 90 to 100 km/hr. (without semi assist). But scout it out before you try this for yourself, as there are sharp turns and possible gravel or potholes.

Anyone wanting to recreate that semi scene in Breaking Away on IN-37, should keep this in mind: At some point in the future, IN-37, between B'ton and Indy is going to be converted to I-69.

That's the great thing about Attack Point: ask a 'throw away question' about a film I wasn't sure anyone would remember and you get a wealth of information. Conversely one can ask a serious question and in an instant some tricky Aussie can turn it to mush. Its like a box of chocolates.......

So Mike, social night at FP could include a gala showing of "Breaking Away" ?(good movie BTW). Should attract international attendance!

Ha! I'm a cutter. I grew up in Bloomington and was 13 in 1977 when Breaking Away was filmed. My Mom went to the premier, which was in Bloomington. They tore down the stadium where the race was held. Now the race is held on a cinder track around the soccer field. The library still looks the same (and it's still too good for me to go inside). The town square has different shops but looks the same.

If you know the movie scenes well, there will be spots you recognize if you drive through the town or keep your eyes open in the sprint. There were lots of shots from all over campus and the sprint will have to go through some of them.

My parents continued to live in B-town until last year so I would get back every year or two. I went back to the quary 4 years ago. It is on private property so technically you are trespassing to go there. The quary is still active but mostly on the other edge of the property. It is aabout a mile hike to get to the spot. I hesitate to give people directions on how to get there as there is also no good place to park. The vegetation has grown up all around the swimming hole and the nice white limestone has faded and colored. I'm sure they did a lot of work to make it look nice for the movie. The owners would dump stuff in the water to make it less clear and lower the attractiveness to tourists immediately after the movie. They may still do that.

Other things to do in Bloomington

0) This is a MUST. Go to The Chocolate Moose for ice cream
1) Get a full yard of beer at The Irish Lion, 2 half-yards don't count (kids okay outside of bar)
2) Get a pizza at Nick's English Pub (kids okay downstairs)
3) Drive 20 miles up the road to Nashville, IN through Brown County. Brown County State Park is world famous for fall colors. Look up on the internet for more info.
4) Go bowling in the student union. They used to let the public in (not just for students) but I'm not sure if they still do. Breaking Away fans will recognize this.
5) Visit Lake Monroe, the largest body of water totally within Indiana.
6) Go cow tipping at Farmer Brown's Field near North High School at the corner of Prough Road and Maple Grove Road.

mikeminium:
The student union (Indiana Memorial Union) will be the parking and staging area for the sprint.

I can't vouch for the cow tipping, but I know a bicyclist who ran into a cow once.

The Ransburg Scout Reservation (middle distance) is on the shore of Lake Monroe, and if the water is high, maybe we can give you a swimming option on one leg :-).

Campus might be buzzing quite a bit on that Friday, given the expectations of a certain local team.

I also grew up in Bloomington and I still have relatives here (I'm in town for Christmas.) My family name is Lanam; my great-great grandfather is buried in the little cemetary on Lanam Ridge Road just north of Yellowwood. We lived about 4 miles away from Yellowwood when I was little. I worked on the IU campus one summer.

I stayed out of the quarries. A friend's sister was electrocuted in one.

Oh, and definitely stay in Bloomington. There are a lot of places fairly close to the University; the east side will be more convenient for the other areas. Indy is about an hour away. There is a lot of live music and theater available when the university is in session. I second jgrove's suggestions of Nick's and the Irish Lion. Since IU is big in Tibetan studies, there are two Tibetan restaurants, along with about every other type you would find in bigger cities.

The Mathers Museum of World Cultures is good if you like that sort of thing. (I do.)

Any updates on schedule and motels? I'd like to buy my plane tickets asap, before the price get even worse.
Jan 8, 2013 2:17 AM #
mikeminium:
Sprint will be Friday afternoon on the IU campus. Sunday will have fairly early starts but you should allow at least 2 hours to get to Indy airport of you are returning a car. Motels are Comfort Inn (be sure to give OUSA corporate number) and Holiday Inn. The lower cost option is a motor lodge called A Sunmerhouse Inn. Details will be on the ocin website in a week or do.

Another lodging note. The Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) is a higher price option but is located directly on the sprint map on campus. There may be a day-of-race embargo on Friday on checking in until after you have run the sprint. (I'm not sure if any of the rooms offer views of the course).
