GuyO:
Bjorn Arne Walberg, HVO Mapping Director, and occasional AP poster on the subject of mapping and LiDAR, died suddenly last Saturday, February 2, while hiking/running in the Apshawa Preserve in West Milford, NJ -- possibly a future map project.

Back in November, two-years of work (with assistance, mostly from GregBalter) culminated in the debut of the first orienteering map of Silas Condict County Park, in Kinnelon, NJ.

Bjørn was a great guy, humble and helpful and smart and energetic and always ready to laugh. He will be sorely missed.

Some excerpts from Guy's link...

For those wishing to attend a memorial service:

The family has asked friends and relatives to a gathering of all who knew and loved him at the Smoke Rise Village Inn, 9 Perimeter rd., Kinnelon, NJ on Saturday the 9th of February from 12pm-4pm (black socks and sandals optional). An outdoor service to remember and celebrate this well-loved, unique man will be held Sunday, the 10th of February at 1pm at the Silas Condict Park, 100 Kinnelon rd., Kinnelon, NJ.

This is indicative:

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to establish an annual orienteering event at Silas Condict Park. It was a hope of Bjorn’s to be able to inspire others to try out the fun sport of orienteering. Donations can be directed to Boy Scout Troop 277.

I'm very sorry to hear of this; I didn't know Bjorn, but he clearly had a very powerful impact on the lives of people around him.

Bjorn would have loved this weather...

He would have described it as "a little taste of winter..."

I met Bjorn during my short stint in HVO-land and was instantly impressed with how nice and welcoming he was. And it's always nice to meet another Norwegian. I was sad to hear of his passing.

Yes, me too. This is incredibly tragic, and my heart goes out to his family.
