It’s like Earth Hour, only more useful. It’s like a critical mass ride, only effective. The world’s biggest, completely unorganised, mass cycling rally will happen wherever you are, on March 20, between 6 and 7 pm. Why? Because you will be riding your bike.
Ride how you like, where you like, with whom you like, or ride alone. Just get on your bike and pedal the sucker. By doing so, you will be showing the world our staggering numbers, and unspoken yearning for safer, more edifying, cycling conditions.

First day of Spring? Evening bike ride? Maybe some others joining in? Nice idea! But this "Hour" will have to develop quite a bit to become more "effective" than the 500-1000 Critical Mass riders clogging Chicago's downtown streets each month.

effective = disruptive?

....not at all!

Since each bike rider takes up ~6 square-feet of road space, and each car takes up ~120 sq-ft of road (not including the 3-4 car-lengths of stopping space required by law), it is actually the CARS that disrupt and threaten normal human activity. Certainly not the quiet, efficient, and non-polluting bicycles.

It's not sure it's really about Cars versus Bikes in the way Critical Mass seems to be.

.... I wonder many women, kids, 80 year olds, do you see attending Critical Mass? How 'effective' are they are gaining popular support? If they were actually 'effective' surely we'd see wider spread policy change (Not just token pockets here and there) You'd see proper action by policy makers and designers. Besides, not many people really want to be noticed in the negative way that critical mass does. How many people might show up in Chicago if more risk averse cyclists felt better about coming along?

Bike Hour is completely different. The intention is to make form of 'protest' that is a positive experience; that people more will actually want to participate in, that encourages the full spectrum of people who like to ride for all the reasons (not just the traffic hardened).

Bike hour is about everybody. Bike Hour is about trying to make cycling easier, safer, widespread and accessible, to EVERYONE!
