WyattRerun: I (Wyatt) was rather sloppy, and logistically challenged, retying my shoe ~4 times and doing not nearly enough compass work the first time around.

To see how fast I should have run the course, I reran the first 6 controls, and did way better. I forgot a compass on that loop, but I effectively had the terrain memorized. I took some slightly different routes the 2nd time, but I knew all the big features and attacks. Plus with almost no look at the map, I could look at the ground a bit better for the footing I'm not great at yet.

Wyatt: At Allamuchy yesterday, I generally used rough compass, and quick glances at the map for terrain matching. Also, I didn't look at the map at all after copying it before I started.

With all that rock, I barely have any time to look at the map, or even the compass, so it's hard to keep moving confidently. I can either come to a near-stop and read the map well, and pick a pace count, or just get by with very quick glances, and rough compass.

That technique resulted in a lot of low-confidence running, and sloppy routes/minor mistakes, e.g. drifting ~0-100m offline when straight was good.

What did Boris & Sergei do well there?

BorisGr: Wyatt,
I think that good visibility here allowed me to plan ahead a little bit and often spot features that were fairly far away and just run to them, simplifying the map tremendously. I also thought that there were sufficiently many features there that I could usually afford to be imprecise in my navigation until I got to the circle and could relocate easily there. My routes, by the way, are up at www.geocities.com/bgranovskiy/maps.html

z-man: All I can say is that I used pricise bearing a lot, and as Boris mentioned already, the woods were quite open to spot the furthers feature to run toward with slowing down a bit to glance at the map.
