2014 What a year for orienteering in Canada!! Canadian Champs in Whistler BC then the North Americans in Ottawa. These are two of the top five or so venues for orienteering in North America.

Well, I'd like to see your photos. But all I get is a prompt asking me to join FarceBook.

I'm a big believer that any pre-event info whether maps, photos, or info about the terrain or venue should be posted in places freely available to all without forcing them to join anything. But that's just my lame archaic opinion.

Good on ya, Mike. I'm sure it was an oversight.
A great site for telling a story and promoting an event is slideshare where you can see simple and quick presentations like this one

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

...but in the meantime we can send you a fax ;-)

I guess it is my fault - I didn't realize people without FB accounts wouldn't be able to see the event's Facebook page, so perhaps I shouldn't have promoted the FB page through AP.

Another way to see some event info is to visit the event website at www.coc2014.ca ("read only"). It doesn't have images of the promo / teasers though it does have a few terrain shots

They also have a website.

And the Facebook page is freely available to anyone. I clicked the link while logged out, and I was able to see all of the photos and comments to date. I just can't join the conversation while not logged in (or not having an account). Yes, it does ask you to join, but you're not forced to join.

Not true. Try logging out of Facebook and clicking your link, it still goes to the same page, but there is the "join Facebook" banner at the top. Without joining, you can click on Photos to see photos, etc. You can even see all of the conversation on front page, too. Nothing is hiding.

I organize all of CascadeOC's stuff regarding the Adventure Runs, and it's all done through Facebook, and everyone has access to it. I've made sure of that.

For what it's worth, CascadeOC's number of Facebook likes is bigger than our old, still-in-use Yahoo group.

Maybe it's browser or device specific. I used to be able to see FB photo pages on my laptop. But on the phone all I get is the "join" page and no way to close or bypass it. I've been on the road all weekend so haven't had time to try anything but the phone.

Not a real biggie. I know it will be a great venue and I'm sure it will be a fantastic event. Just one of my pet peeves is that all pre event info, whether photos, texts, or maps, that could possibly give any kind of competitive advantage should be equally available to all potential participants. And I grant 99% plus that nobody could possibly gain any advantage from a few photos.

Anyway thanks for listening and considering. As I see more and more stuff posted on FB or on Attackpoint logs (eg a course setter describes his day in the woods in great detail), but that information doesn't get copied to the official event site, I begin to have concerns about fairness of not providing equal information to all comers.

And in that regard, I'm probably guilty too, although I do try to pretty carefully edit / censor any in-the-woods info when I write my AP logs.

Beautiful woods.
What I wonder about from those photos is how many times have the Vancouver area orienteers been sprint orienteering in Whistler Village - at least one more than the rest of us for sure..
Is there going to be an embargo put in place to prohibit being in the village with an orienteering map, similar to the embargo that has been in place in Hamilton for over a year?

I think it's only been used twice, right? Barebones 2010 and BC Champs 2012?

Embargoes, map samples and photos are already posted at www.coc2014.ca. Everyone can view it (I hope). The FB page is an additional excitement builder. Take it for what it is.

Can you promise no snow on Whistler Mountain? I was very disappointed to not get the opportunity to run there in 2010.

No Westerns sprint?

We are still trying to figure out where/what maps for Relay and Western Sprint.

No, we cannot guarantee no snow on the mountain.

In 2009 it was snow free beginning of July, but in 2010 there was snow into mid August (as you experienced). For COC2014 we wanted the 3rd weekend in August, but we could not get permission due to conflict with massive mountain bike festival Crankworx.
