Can you match the event to the year of each Dundas Valley map revision?
1975 -COC
1978 -Ont/ Que 6-days ?
1986 - World Cup
1996 - ?
2013 - COC
Registration is now open!
Golden Horseshoe Orienteering invites you to enjoy the challenges of the 'kame and kettle' terrain of the Dundas Valley on a new and expanded map for the middle and long distance Nationals. McMaster University is the venue for the sprint Nationals.
The weekend kicks off on Thursday evening as Adventure Running Kids and Adventure Running X present a fundraiser for Canada's High Performance Program. Visit

Answers to our map trivia:
1975: Canadian Champs
1978: Canadian 6-day
1986: World Cup
1996: Ontarios
2013: Nationals
Sounds like a great event! Can't wait to get back into those steep ravines. :) Just a couple of questions:
- is it correct that there's no rebate of any kind? (sometimes I've seen some for registering for all races, or for provincial/national teams)
- Is the "Adventure Running Kids® Fun Zone & Orienteering Canada Expo & Banquet" under Extras strictly for youth then? Including the fundraiser for, from what I can guess, recreating the Know-It-All map challenge?
- Is there a central location/lodging package considered, from the mention of Camp Canterbury Hills? (as I believe that's where we were based for the 2010 Ontario championships) Or are we on our own in Hamilton?
So looking forward to this!
Only the eastern end of the Dundas Valley is 'ridge and valley terrain'. The western end is more of a 'kame and kettle' terrain. So big hills broad valley bottoms and some detailed (spaghetti) contours - see the maps above.
We aren't offering a rebate but we are throwing in a free T-shirt to those that race all three events (and a free T-shirt to juniors that run any event). And yes you are correct that the fundraiser is recreating the Know-it-All challenge.
ARK fun zone and OC Expo and fundraiser are open for everyone (all ages).
No central lodging/package this year as we found the meal times and booking requirements too restrictive (for organizers and participants).
What is the genesis of this term 'Nationals'. Has the COF changed the name of the COC's or is this a Hamilton marketing idea?
In either case I like it but just want to know if that is the title going forward or just a one-year event.
PS Good on you for picking an Ottawa orienteer for the photo on your home page.
Nationals is a whole lot easier to say than "Canadian Orienteering Championships", and sounds a lot better than "cock", if you're to pronounce the acronym. Every other sport calls it nationals... not like that makes it right. Anyway, I approve. Also, the terrain looks awesome, I'll be there!
is this a Hamilton marketing idea?
Given their recent track record, I approve of anything coming out of Hamilton.
"C-O-Cs" (which is what I have always heard the Canadian O Champs called) is just as easy to say as "Nationals", and certainly better than "coc" (which I have never heard for either the event or the Seattle-area O-club).
I've always said "See Oh Sees" as well. "Nationals" works just as well.
Registered - and already fifty registrations on day 1!
The decision to name the race Nationals was a GHO marketing idea but we'd be happy to let Orienteering Canada use it in the future if they want it, at no charge :-)
It is also the 2013 Ontario Orienteering Championships!
It is also the 2013 Ontario Orienteering Championships Provincials!
Ottawa is hosting the Continentals in 2014!
I´ve always said "See Oh Sees", but lately there has been a lot of "Wock" going around too... Is there a better way of referring to the World Champs?
???
Provincials
Regionals
Nationals
Continentals
Worlds
...
...Planetaries?
Systems?
Galactics?
Universals?
Dimensionals?
51 people signed up in the first 24 hours! 249 places remain. Thanks for your support!
As of this date 35% of the entries to the Canadian 'Nationals' are not Canadian nationals. (Well there are some CAOC entries that may still be Canadian) If this rate were to continue there will only be 195 entry spots for Canadians in their own championships. Sadly, that may be enough but again this may be the first year where entry spots are in demand for transfer.
Moral of the story: unless you are a 65+ orienteer from Alberta or BC don't delay your entry.
what is the Orienteering Nationals Expo ?
The Expos became the Nationals.
ah, I see it now... "The Expo will include workshops, presentations, a silent auction fundraiser for the National Team and great food."
The Expo is an alternative to the traditional sit-down banquet at the Nationals.
so WRE are the sprint and middle, right ? will be any class combination running the same course but different classes - so that will count as WRE. just asking.. or will be registered competitors allowed to change category , after registration? ( for that purpose) when more details are ready
Nick, I can't answer the question about the Sprint and Middle WRE course / categories but as the registrar, I can tell you that people write me frequently (even now) to change their category, SI card # - even surname and gender! I just stay logged into the registration database all the time. There will be a date beyond which changes cannot be accepted but that's not for a long time yet. We're close to 100 registrants in the first week of registration with 200 spots remaining. People who know for sure they want to come should sign up sooner rather than later. You can add races later if you're not sure of your travel plans.
Yes the sprint and middle are also World Ranking Events. Given the WRE rules you should not assume the combining of categories will take place if you want to get WRE points (ie., register in M/W Elite). While our plan is to follow the Orienteering Canada guidelines (10 courses for middle and 5 for sprint) we may add additional sprint courses if course participation numbers make the start window too long. The WRE bulletins will be released in mid to late July once we finalize sprint courses, arena, and athlete pre-race zone. GHO would like to thank Alex Kerr for volunteering his time as the IOF advisor for the middle and sprint events.
