I've been told that sustaining a high cadence in a low gear is one of the best ways to train on a bike. Keep spinning the pedals fast until the quads burn, then keep spinning until the only logical conclusion is to fall off the bike in exhaustion*.

However, I have no idea whether that's actually true.

* and whether it's true or not, it's probably not the best thing to do on a public road.

Yeah, I think lower gear = faster cadence, meaning better cardio workout, whereas higher gear = slower cadence and more emphasis on the specific muscle strength. I definitely find I'm limited by muscle strength if I'm trying to go full out.
