Has anybody considered creating an app for this website, for easy update on the go?

Many of the smartphones have ANT+ capability, would it be possible to upload the forerunner data via a smartphone to AP?

Ifor:
IpBike has direct upload support for AttackPoint built in. Has full support for ANT+ sensors on an ANT capable phone or using a USB ANT stick. More details at http://www.iforpowell.com/cms/

AP automatically auto-detects and formats for mobile devices very nicely and I can't really see any benefit to a standalone app. I actually do most of my logging from my phone..

I guess lots of users ahve used mobile devices for quite some time to download data from gps devices and upload to AP.

android tablet:
http://www.sportablet.com/

android phone:

iphone/ipad:

I don't use android or iphone, so instead I use gpsbabel to download data from my gps and I wrote qdr to make gps overlays (those apps run on my linux smart phone just fine).

I use ipBike to upload drectly to AP and find it very easy to use. The app can sync activities and even uses my phones gps to log my course which is uploaded automatically. What the ap can't sync, I input from my android phone.

I use wahoofitness to download GPS data to my iPhone, but I have not found a way to add the GPX file to AP when updating my log on my iPhone. It would be awesome if I could as, I do not own a PC or an android device and I have to wait until I am next back in the office to add them.

IpBike for Iphone?

I just tried android tablet on my samsung tablet 10.1:
http://www.sportablet.com/

COOL!

It was really easy to use. The part missing is direct connection to AP. It was possible to export the data as gpx (no HR-data in that case). Its also possible to export to garmin connect, but since I have not used that i dont know how it works.

I tried to use wahoofitness to load my 310xt with the Garmin ANT stick onto an iPad. ipad didn't recognize it. Does that stick not work? Or do you have to buy the Wahoo Key?

Sorry there want be an IpBike for Iphone. One platform is enough for me to maintain and Android has some good phones available for bike computer / data logging App with features not in an Iphone e.g. ANT, Pressure sensor and some even waterproof.

Ifor - understood, I use an iPhone as it is provided by my company

Walk - I bought the Wahoo Key. I upload to the App and then to Garmin Connect where I can view my route and get elevation/correction etc., which I refer to when completing my AP log. I also export the corrected trace to Dropbox and add to AP later.

@Ptr: I use SportTablet on a Nexus 7.1 with a Garim 305. Personally, I use the "Export to SD card" option rather than "Export as GPX".

Uploading the resulting files (.tcx I think) to AP preserves the heart rate data.

File upload with browser is such a common and basic task, so if iphone/pad's browser doesn't support it(?!?) there must be piles workarounds, like app to upload any file to any site.

AdamL << Ahh.. nice to know, will try that today.

Jagge, iOS doesn't generally allow full access to the file system (apps play in their own sandboxes, with access only to photos and videos). And I think Safari only allows uploads of photos, even if you download other types of files to view.

However, iOS users can try the browser iCab Mobile, which does allow non-photo file uploads. You can download a GPX file from one site and upload it to AP. Just tried it and it worked fine.

AdamL << Worked perfekt, but i seems like sportablet is no longer free to use. It says it should be possible to test with the latest log file, but its only possible to test with the latest one. And to buy the program is not possible either. Maby it will come.

AdamL:
@Ptr Looking at your comment, I realised I'm using this app and not the full Sportablet.

It still requires an in-app purchase (or at least it did when I installed it). Maybe it will work for you.

My Garmin was stolen recently and before getting new GPS watch I thought I will test iPhone apps. So far I had two runs using MapMyRun app and I am not impressed. First of all - it drains battery quicker then I anticipated. Based on my calculations fully charged iPhone would last about 8 hours max using iPhone.

Other thing I noticed that MapMyRun is marginal - for lack of better term - recording step-by-step activity. For example - I stopped for about 2-3 minutes during my run today to refill water bottles, wash my face, etc. but location of my stop was off by about 100 yards. There was section in my run I did run/walk, I remembered sections where I walked but seems like MapMyRun rounded up/down those sections.

Also I was not impressed with MapMyRun interface using desktop computer after the run.

I wonder if there is better GPS based app for iPhones.

But so far I have to say that without exaggerating - Attackpoint feature allowing GPS uploads and all the features that come with it are still my favorite.

I use Motion-X GPS on iPhone and find its accuracy to be pretty decent and with a good feature set. It does suck the life out of a battery fairly quickly though. You can lessen the battery suck by turning off some features like pulling map data live via cell modem. I 'share' my track after a run and it goes to my email as a gpx and I just do a manual upload to AP.

Gil:
@cmorse - thanks for the tip!

Now that I have couple runs in using Motion-X GPS I like it better that MapMyRun app for sure and I can get GPX file that I can upload to AP. Interface is easy to use. It was first iPhone app I paid for but I am pleased. Accuracy is still not as good as Garmin GPS watch but I kept my phone wrapped in plastic bag and hidden in fuel belt instead of using armband. I heard accuracy increases if phone is kept in armband.

GPS feature still does drain phones battery but that's nothing to do with app - it's how GPS feature interacts with phone. For most folks probably it is not an issue and for most training runs it won't be an issue for me as long as I make phone is charged enough before I go out for run.

Where GPS watches are still better than smartphones is taking a quick look during a run to check on average speed, distance covered, heart rate, etc. It is technically possible to take readings from smart phone during the run but it's much easier using GPS watch.

Yeah, the iPhone sucks if you want real time info. But I generally just stick it in the gel pocket of a single bottle pack (don't even use the bottle anymore) and it sits in the small of my back. If I am running where I want to keep track of pace etc, I use the voice coaching feature and headphones - I set the interval to every km, or every 5 minutes etc.. You can choose which parameters to announce.

Battery drain is app dependent, when I want to maximize battery life, I make sure apps that utilize the gps are closed, not just backgrounded and battery life improves dramatically, even if the phone is still on.

Do any of you use Strava? I haven't experimented with it much, but I think you should be able to use your phone as gps, and it just uploads and all that pretty automatically.
Jul 17, 2013 1:48 PM #
AdamL:
@acjospe I use Strava, but I found that to get the most out of it you need to pay for premium. That includes the export to GPX option so data could be imported to Attackpoint.

Personally, I prefer the training diary and effort analytics in Attackpoint and use Strava only because I have some friends on there and we can keep track of each other's progress.

what it comes to gps logging, AP's add training page could easily have a gps logger implemented with html/javascript. So one could just browse there and start logging, no apps needed. Something like this test page, should work with all smartphones.
