Discussion: Monetizing the brand

A lot of people on this board slam the label 'orienteering'. Replacing it with something "sexier" is just what we need to grow the sport.

In the investing world, hedge funds are regarded as the smart money (arguable, but let's stipulate that.) Among hedge funds, DE Shaw is one of the most renowned names--and among other things responsible for spawning, or expectorating, Jeff Bezos.

Anyway, you may find it noteworthy that same DE Shaw now owns a certain trademark.

You think OUSA sanctioning fees are bad? Wait until you have to pay your pound of flesh to the hedgies.

Clearly stocks and bonds and CDOs no longer hold the promise of riches. But, rent seeking from the corpus orienteerum is the strategy for the new decade.

Vamonos.

Ghastly. I really think that trademarks are one of the modern world's most horrendous inventions.

I'm with Bats, and I would add patents to the same pile, too.

However, if the trade is not in "Investment advisory and investment management services in the area of alternative investments", my understanding is that the pound of flesh cannot be successfully collected. "Unless a famous [emph. added] mark is involved, trademark infringement may not be present if someone is simply using someone else's trademark for an unrelated good or service in a manner that does not cause consumer confusion, or in a manner that is not likely to cause consumer confusion."

Please don't ignore my irony. I shroud myself in it.

This is a new trademark application (two weeks old). I think j-man put them up to it.

so is the idea to charge clubs money for using "orienteering" word anywhere and thus drive them to using a better name?

Didn't Silva Trademark orienteering in the US?

I googled that and up came this link

This appears to be an *application* to receive a trademark, not the granting of one, no?

It is quite disappointing to read the title line "Monetizing the brand" only to discover it is not cattle brands you are talking about. What's the matter with you folks anyway? I would write more, but tumbleweeds the size of house trailers have been reported 10 miles west of Laramie and they're headed this way. There is only just enough time to get the tumbleweed fences raised.

Didn't Silva give away the rights to the brand "Silva" in the US?

GuyO:
The mark is ORIENTEER, not ORIENTEERING

Plus I am an orienteerer so I am safe from a civil suit.
Sep 26, 2013 7:31 AM #
Cristina:
I think we should start calling ourselves orienteerists, just to be safe.
Sep 26, 2013 7:33 AM #
Tooms:
I think tRicky is a bit of an orientater at times.

As long as I stay in Sweden I should be OK. We spell orienteering with only one "e"...
Sep 26, 2013 7:56 AM #
tRicky:
Which one?
Sep 26, 2013 8:31 AM #
Cristina:
The first one - orientring
Sep 26, 2013 8:53 AM #
tRicky:
Maybe he means O-Ringen.
Sep 26, 2013 9:51 AM #
bubo:
;)

(OK, smart guys - I guess we use two then...)

It's such a long word that he was just using the one 'e' - after being spoken it was quickly grabbed and relocated to the later syllable.

bubo:
No, I just forwarded it by e-mail.

jjcote:
OK, bubo, so which two, then?
Sep 27, 2013 9:48 AM #
bubo:
I definitely use the first one. CanĀ“t really decide if I should throw away the second or third :(
Any suggestions?
Sep 27, 2013 2:21 PM #
Canadian:
Do away with both the second and the third and put a compass there instead then call it a logo and trademark it.

Alternatively replace them both with a footprint so we can aggressively market foot-o!

Stick it inside a circle and add a moon and call it rOgaining
