You mean the 2014 US Individual Champs?

Pink Socks:
Guy, it says 2014 Individual Champs. 4th line of text.

But, there's a typo, so it actually says "Chamionships". Hopefully these haven't gone to print yet.

I like the use of "Nationals", following Canada's lead this year. I also like the QR code link, photo, and map, too!

Also, there's the use of "OUSA".

I remember during the rebrand from USOF to Orienteering USA that shortening to "OUSA" was not preferred for official business. Since this flyer is essentially promoting O-USA's biggest event, and uses the O-USA logo, it seems like it should also be following the style guide, so to speak.

It's no big deal to me, and I'm not a branding policeman for O-USA; it's really up to the organization's leadership to say whether it's worth changing.

Dammit most have gone to print but is fixed now. You would think someone would have spotted it before, thanks Patrick.

Pink Socks is correct about "official" standard that use of "OUSA" for advertising like this is *not* preferred (not that I'm the referee, and they use it elsewhere in newsletters to members, etc.).

The other thing is, they're not the "OUSA Championships" at all so you can just leave "OUSA" out. They're the US Individual Orienteering Championships (sanctioned by OUSA, since there's currently no other sanctioning organization). They were never called the USOF Championships, were they? ... though there is a stipulation that you must be a member and US citizen/naturalized to win a medal.

If we could call it the US O Cup, that would simplify things. :-)

Always a great weekend of orienteering when racing at Letchworth. Really looking forward to this.

@pinksocks: "I like the use of "Nationals", following Canada's lead this year"
Just for the record GHO advertised this weekend's race as "Orienteering Nationals" or "Nationals" as it resonated more with parents and kids than "COC's" or "Canadian Orienteering Championships". The aim was to get more kids into the race. While we didn't hit the 100 kids we had hoped for it will be the biggest COC's in Ontario since 1994 (and we had a cap on entries). It is also worth noting that we have received some criticism about our (re)naming approach (we didn't ask permission).

If this event is the 2014 US Nationals, what should we call RMOC's event in August 2014?
Oct 10, 2013 6:57 PM #
bshields:
THE US Champs.

The RMOC event is the "Two-Day Classic Championships", right?

Well, maybe we want it to be the 2014 US Nationals. ;-)

US Championship event names

Two "2014 US Nationals" events within a few of months of each other would be very confusing.

That's my point, Janet. Out of all those championships, who gets to claim "Nationals"?
Oct 11, 2013 3:41 AM #
JanetT:
Not my call, but I'd say whoever said it first.

Bring a resolution to the AGM?

GuyO:
The only problem with "Nationals" is that it is relative, and therefore, potentially confusing out of context. Works in-country, and certainly gets the message across when telling non-O-ers "I'm going to Nationals". Otherwise, it needs to be proceeded by "US", or "Canadian" for clarity.

This, of course, fits with Hammer's thinking, because his priority was not attracting the die-hards -- who would come anyway -- but those less committed (for now)...

"I’m going to the Nationals. "
Oh? Who are they playing? Is it DC?

Or do you mean the Grand Nationals?

Nothing wrong with Championship!

Or The National? That would be amazeballs.

BTW ,we did run this idea by OUSA and received their OK. It is mainly an idea to promote the event to a larger audience. We have no evil intentions toward RMOC or any other club or individual.
