when i looked at the splits i thought how frustrating to do 500m in 40 minutes. but you bounced back and still had the best time on one of the later splits. now thats mentally tough!
Soupbone had spent so much time before that leg, wandering, wandering, that he could run that short leg at top speed, without even looking at his map. There ARE some benefits of blowing a control...
Anyway there were a lot of other top orienteers who turned in much worse leg times than Soupbone yesterday.
Sorry things did not go better for you. Missed talking to you while you were out here.
Thanks, that's just the it goes sometimes. It was a great time, and I do look forward to coming out again there again. Maybe I will fly next time.
or the train, good from Chi in all directions....stand up, walk around, look at the o-venues rolling by that you dont see as much of from the highway or the fly way, sleep a few hours, all good.
We have taken the train several times.
Best bet is to detrain in Albany and drive from there.
Yes...east of Albany the trains have to pass through the Housatonic tunnel on their way across northern Massachusetts..which can be a bottleneck, 'cause freight trains get priority over Amtrak. So very often they put you on buses in Albany for points east instead.
But coming from the west, you leave Chicago on Amtrak around 5pm, and are passing through Syracuse and Buffalo the next morning.
Once upon a time I took trains from Springfield, MA, on to Ann Arbor changing in Buffalo to go across Canada. Did that quite a few times. Leave Springfield at 6:30pm and get to AA about 7:30 am. Quite a nice journey in those days. Seeing the sun rise over Canada cold and icy stretches was always good. Would also see kids out on about any frozen puddle playing at hockey.
The train tunnel in northwestern MA is the
Hoosac Tunnel. It is not used by Amtrak, which takes a more southerly route across the Berkshires between Pittsfield and Springfield.
Thanks Glen! No wonder I didn't get any hits when I tried to google "Housatonic tunnel!" That is an interesting Wikipedia article, considering that tunnel was initially proposed as a waterway, before trains were even invented!
But for some reason, I've been bused from Albany to Pittsfield, MA. after coming all the way from Chicago on Amtrak's
Lake Shore Limited. Do you know why?
chi it might have been a non-standard thing - like a couple of trees blew down or there was a wreck...
Well I remember being told it was "because the Tunnel is under repair." But perhaps freight trains that would have normally used the tunnel had been diverted over the Amtrak rails.
There is a much shorter tunnel along the route between Albany and Pittsfield (near Canaan, NY) which may have been the referenced tunnel, rather than the Hoosac Tunnel. Trains do not pass through the Hoosac Tunnel until they are east of Pittsfield.
Very interesting. THAT's the tunnel I've always thought was the Hoosec Tunnel. And for a year, I lived near its eastern end, in a cabin on Richmond Pond, just over the hill from Canaan, while I worked at the big GE facility in Pittsfield. We could see the Amtrak train from Boston going by on the other side of the Pond while we had breakfast.
(Away from trains and tunnels and back to friends and things...) Soupbone, never caught sight of you again after seeing you on Friday. Looked around the 4th floor of the Comfort Inn Sat afternoon (even eavesdropping at doors) hoping I could find you so maybe we could strum some tunes, but it was not to be.
Too bad, I missed you, would of like to hear that orienteering blues song. I should of given you my phone no. I am not going to make it to any more A meets till Dec. in Ohio.
I won't be traveling to another A-meet until Spring (though we have a couple out here), but we'llmanage a music session one of these days!
Ok if I drive I will bring 2 guitars.
