bl: ' felt totally dehaydrated and could barely pickup my legs'

appears to be a goat prep effort...

lots of controls for 7 plus...who was the sadist:)

next sunday for me?

PBricker: Yeah, I've done two weeks in a row of longish courses for goat prep, but it hasn't given me much confidence! I think I'll bring some gu.

Hope to see you Sunday.

GlenT: The plan for the Goat is to have all the bags hung on features that are in the circle. :-) And if you don't like how the bag is hung, you can skip it (well, for one of them anyway). And there'll be water out on the course (some of which will be for drinking). See you Sunday. Sprints on Saturday?

PBricker: Can you do something about the weather?

No sprints: I want fresh legs the first half of the BG so I can make good time before I bonk.

bl: who thought of sprints before the BG?

certainly for an earlier generation...one that can run 'endlessly'...I recall similar capability quite a while back!

GlenT: The weather will be perfect.

I think pre-BG sprints started about three years ago to make a full weekend possible for people traveling long distances. I don't know who the originator was for sure, but PG may have been involved. I haven't found them to detract from BG performance, although I've mostly been concerned with finishing in under 3.5 hrs (with a target of about 2.5hrs) rather than actually "racing".

This year's sprints are about 2.2km each, so they shouldn't be too taxing.

Phil - "Go hard until you bonk" doesn't sound like the best stategy for any race, particularly a Billygoat.

PBricker: The alternative is "go easy until I bonk."

But, seriously, it has always surprised me that virtually everyone goes out too fast in goat events. And I always get caught up in it, even though I know better and consider it a novice mistake to do that in a long trail race.

coach: May be better than my current strategy, start slow and slow down, doesn't seem to produce great results..
Back in 1990, there was a sprint at Northfield Mt before the Goat, called "The Kid", put on by M. Platt.

jjcote: And in 1991, The Kid was held at Peter's house (mass-start motala), followed by the Orienteering Superstars competition.

#  Posted 2007-05-17 22:38:55
jjcote: Whoops, I correct myself. The Kid/Superstars at Peter's house was in 1990, and The Kid at Northfield I believe was in 1989.

feet: The sprints in the current incarnation began with CSU's organization of the 2004 Billygoat at Mt Tom. We actually had sprint + middle on Saturday. I'm not sure whose idea it was, although I set the sprint course as well as the goat.

#  Posted 2007-05-17 23:39:32
PBricker: I remember it well: doing both the middle and the sprint wiped me out for the goat.
I'm thinking of bringing the superstars competition back to Western Mass in conjunction with next year's A-meet.
