southerncross: Preliminary information is now available for the 8th WRC to be held in Estonia on the 13th and 14th of September 2008.

Very kind pricing for those over 55 (Super veterans-Masters of the Universe!)

Should be a great event.

ebone: Whoops!
From the USOF Sanctioning Planning Calendar:
"September 13-14 SAMM: The Sasquatch Rogaine; Mt. Helens - MT. Adams area, Washington State North American Rogaine Champs"

#  Posted 2007-05-16 21:27:22
Tundra/Desert: I'm sure Sammamish will consider moving the event. Especially if the USOF Rogaine Committee (hint) voices an objection.

southerncross: Actually the hosts of 7WRC 2006 who are hosting the 2008 Australian Championships for a period of 2 to 3 months (though not publically annouced) had the 2008 Australian championships set for the date of 8WRC until with much mirth and shuffling of feet we realised that maybe we should not compete against 8WRC!?

#  Posted 2007-05-17 20:20:05
kupackman: According to the Sammamish website, they have it listed as August 2008.

southerncross: In the mean time you can attempt to select the winners and placegetters! See http://8wrc2008.rogain.ee/feedback.php?tid=140

The winners of womens division of ERC 2008 maybe the stand out team in the womens category-Burlinova Anna, Safronova Irina. http://www.rogaine-spb.narod.ru/erc08/rgn20.htm

Mens? Chris Forne and Dennis de Monchy, NZ are back to defend their win in 2006. Seidl Miroslav and Boranek Petr, Czech Republic won ERC 2008. See above link. Rowlands and Barbour will they add to their resume?

Mixed? Julie Quinn and David Baldwin, Aust are back after winning the mixed in 2004 and Julie winning the Womens in 2006 have remained in form in Australia with emphatic Australian title wins in 2007 and 2008. Raimonds Lapins, Anita Liepina and Guntars Mankus, Latvia, Mixed WRC 2006 winners will they add to their impressive performance from 2006 and earlier WRC's?

Otherwise it is a mystery to me? Any strong performers amongst the small British contingent. I'm sure there are amongst the East Europeans and there are amongst the other nations.

By the way do no tell anybody but 9WRC 2010 will remain in Europe either Czech Republic or Ukraine. Just don't tell?!

Good travelling and successful rogaining.

Tundra/Desert: Will be there sometime Friday afternoon. Staying in Võru on Friday night, in Tallinn on Sunday night, at the airport hotel.

Yes, Anna and Irina are the team to watch. Some men's teams should be prepared as this team is capable of placing in the top 3 overall. They are to the women's field kinda like Kloser and Tobin were to the men's field in 2004.

#  Posted 2008-09-03 01:36:00
barb: we'll be at that airport hotel (ulemiste) on Sunday night too.

#  Posted 2008-09-03 07:04:38
kadley: I'll be flying out of Boston Wed and getting into Tallinn Thurs eve 1725. Plan on renting a car and driving down. Not sure where we're staying as Glen is taking care of that. Leaving early Monday 0610.

Tundra/Desert: Made it to Tallinn (which is never for granted, given my track record with the Estonian immigration people). E-mail or text me for dinner on Thursday, maybe. The Russian phone is +7 ninety 555 two 55 three six.

speedy: Nice, we'll see you soon.

southerncross: Pre race review and "after start report" at http://www.sleepmonsters.co.uk/racereport.php?race...

Low DNS rate which seems typical for WRC's. And no major teams missing according the "after start report."

#  Posted 2008-09-14 17:32:49
chitownclark: The WRC results are posted. The favored New Zealand team of De Monchy/Forne were beaten by the Russian team of Dombrovskiy/Shestakov by a score of 300 vs 304 compared with a total possible of 345.

#  Posted 2008-09-14 17:42:46

chitownclark: The competition map is now posted (1:40 000, 5m). On the left side it has handy control descriptions, in English. Except a couple descriptions, such as "ditch corner" (#50) elude me.

As feared, there is a liberal amount of blue ink on the map. Some of the terrain appears incredibly detailed at this scale...reminds me of sand dunes. And there are large expanses of parallel indistinct trails and rides, coupled with parallel ditches, that could make relocating difficult.

My own armchair routing might be to initially head to the far SW corner, and proceed around the map perimeter clockwise. I'd pick up two of the 9-pointers early, and have the benefit of daylight to navigate this detailed terrain west of the main road that contains nearly 100 points. By sunset hopefully I'd be well up toward the north, with its established road system and somewhat easier navigation. Anybody care to suggest their own routing?

#  Posted 2008-09-15 23:33:41
JanetT: Ditch corner looks to be the same as a ditch bend, though the ditches look rather wet (mapped with blue). Ditches in the US tend to be mapped with the brown dotted line symbol, and are often dry.

"Coppice" (# 66, SW corner) looks to be the same as "copse."

Your route sounds like a logical one. I wonder what the US competitors did...

#  Posted 2008-09-16 07:09:52
PG: The sequence of controls, splits, and total beeline distance for each team are here.

I'll try to post my exact route tomorrow....

#  Posted 2008-09-17 11:58:00
Tundra/Desert: There was a lot of wading in very deep water. Dealing with resulting wet clothes, and possible hypothermia, was a major factor in a team's success or lack of. It was our demise. Definitely not a course for someone with low body fat.

#  Posted 2008-09-17 15:12:05
chitownclark: With the nighttime temps close to freezing, hypothermia must have been a very real threat for everyone:

The signs of hypothermia are often quite scary. The first reaction is shivering, which the body does involuntary to stop the body temperature from dropping. As shivering progresses, the muscles begin to involuntarily contract. Again, as the body temperature continues to drop, slurred speech, exhaustion, erratic behavior, and dilated pupils will persist. Unfortunately, if this condition is not attended to immediately, unconsciousness may occur.

And a couple of other factors make it difficult to navigate when you're caught wading, deep in the swamps: eye-level is even lower...2' or 3' above the surface, so you can't really see too far; and most of the terrain is submerged so small navigational features and contours are not available to you. All you can do is plunge ahead on some compass bearing, and when you eventually hit solid ground, it may be mapped or it may not be.
