levitin: Your tale gives a new meaning to "out of gas" at the end of an endurance race. (or, I guess, recalls the original meaning.)

I made it from Worcester to the goat and back on one tank of gas. :-) The only interesting Pike experience I had was the inexplicable slowdown from 65 to 35 in the rainy area (Palmer to Auburn). Oh, and happening upon Jim H and Rich N at the first oasis in MA. (Lee?)

jjcote: Actually, at my first Billygoat (1984), I had driven out with three friends from college, and I was so beat at the end that they had to help me to the car. The car was... just about out of gas, and it was lucky for us that it was generally downhill to Greenfield, and I think the engine actually gave out at the top of the last downhill. That's my recollection, anyway, but I'm not sure that the details completely make sense.

JanetT: Only time I ever ran out of gas was at the top of a long hill, too. There were no cars too close to me on the runout and I was able to coast into the gas station in town (at the traffic light, so if I'd had to stop there I wouldn't have gotten started again!). :-)
