Somehow Java snuck an update past me...
now I can't start Or in the field.

So then I downloaded the "Offline" version of Java (I thought) but that didn't help. I went to the Java control panel and couldn't find the settings that were recommended by the Or site - I followed these instructions until I could not find the "Show Applications" button.

Nor could I find any settings that would prevent Java from doing an http request. The console dump shows a few of those after it fails to launch Or.

If that does not fix your problem then you should still be able to start Ór in the field by:

Use the Windows Start → Settings → Control Panel menu.
Double-click Java.
The Java Control Panel will appear.
Click the ‘View…’ button on the General tab. The Java Cache Viewer will appear (eventually).
Select ‘Show Applications’ on the top left.
Right-click Ór and select ‘Run Offline’.
Ór should start.

In newer versions of Java, there is a combobox on the top left. Select "Applications".

It is normal for Java webstart make http requests to try to download the Ór jar files every time it starts. If it cannot connect, it should use the files that it has already cached.
