Hi All,
I am planning be at Jukola with the juniors. Right now there are five committed males including myself and 2 committed females. This may increase in the next couple weeks. I may signed up 2 Jukola Teams and 1-2 venla teams. If you are interested in being on a USA team or north American team please let me know. I am happy to include Canadian juniors and seniors, US juniors and seniors, etc. The more interest the more teams I will sign up. Let me know on this post I will be get in touch separately. Thanks
Erin

I talked to my school's dean today and she said I can get out of school at least early enough to make it to Jukola. If I make the team I am definitely commiting to being on one of the Jukola teams. Eero is currently talking with his sponsorship organization to see if he can do the same.

I would like to be part of the Jukola team also.

JLaughlin:
I would like to be part of a team. More to follow to see if my schedule changes.

Michael L Taiwan Mike) is in, flight booked to meet with the team June 10, provided no unforeseen changes by airlines

I have signed up the teams for Venla & Jukola, and ordered one 16-person tent. We need two more women, and I'm hoping that we'll get two more JST girls. Anne W? Katrina W? Maybe even nab Meg Parson for a weekend?

The men's team is currently listed as
Ethan
Addison
Austin
Eero
Matt
Zac
Michael

I realize that leaves Jordan and Erin to nucleate a new team. Don't have total confirmation from everyone yet, but most of those people have their plane tix already.

Women's team so far is Isabel and Addie.

I guess an alternative would be that Izzy & Addie go on a men's team and maybe a couple more folks from the JST/USA.

Are the juniors still in need of more women? My club has had some cancellations and won't be able to fill two Venla teams, so there's one woman (could be me!) who will be available to fill a spot.

At the moment the 4th is either Pia or one of her teammates (from Byasen), because they have one extra, provided none of them drops out for illness or other reasons. Pia said that they would know the list of who is running by June 10th after selection races this weekend and Monday.

I am running Leg 7 (not Leg 2, someone broke a leg) for Omega 3. We arrived in the arena towards the finish of the Venla, caught a glimpse of ndobbs in the distance, and saw Louise briefly on YLE during a rest stop on our drive up. Didn't see anyone else from North America, but I'm sure it'll change shortly. Out for a quick nap (downtown Kuopio is sleep-inducing), then back to the arena shortly.

Louise is running again tonight (4th leg) on a random Swedish team (#556).

Third man (Erin) is at the 6.8k mark on his leg, and the US men are currently #631 out of about 1500 teams. We keep moving up!

ken:
are they showing a mirror image of the map for gps tracking?
Jun 15, 2014 2:12 AM #
MJ Stout:
they're showing the map and, at least the leaders have GPS. Not sure about the mirror image.
Jun 15, 2014 2:16 AM #
Spike:
It looks like a mirror image map to me. They run across the screen with a lake on their right hand side. But, from the map it looks like they'd have the lake on their left hand side.
Jun 15, 2014 2:19 AM #
ken:
Yeah, I was scratching my head on some previous TV controls, and finally the lake control made it super obvious. But, when they use the little inset map it is not mirrored.

Hey more experienced Jukola-ists. What does this mean (posted schedule):

8.45 am Jukola changeover is closed

9 am Jukola relay restart for 7th leg

9.20 am Jukola relay restart for 2nd-6th legs
Jun 15, 2014 2:28 AM #
ken:
it means that all remaining team members who haven't started by 8:45 will be mass-started at 9 or 9:20 depending on which leg they are.

Thank you.

Chatted briefly with La Baguette, she also did the Venla-then-Jukola thing. Venla teams surely are a great source to plug the holes on the men's side! sadly it doesn't quite work the other way.
Jun 18, 2014 4:36 AM #
JLaughlin:
The maps on the screens in the arena were mirrored flipped and cropped. Probably something for the following legs.

So who had the best results for the North Americas?
Jun 18, 2014 5:41 AM #
schirminator:
Did not see all the results but I think Sam 34/35 is pretty awesome, sounded like Emily And Eric Kemp had very good races. Sounded like Ross did well to.

Unofficial North American summary, Venla:

There were two North Americans on OK Linne 2, Sam Saeger (USA) running the first leg and Emily Kemp (CAN) on the third. Both had stellar runs, with the 32nd and 31st fastest times on their legs, respectively. Sam was less than 2 minutes behind the lead at changeover, and Emily dropped less than 1.5 minutes during her run. Their team ended up in an impressive (especially for a second team!) 49th place.

There were also two North Americans on Nydalens SK's team, Louise Oram (CAN) on the first leg and Cristina Luis (USA) on the fourth leg. We both had solid runs and, thanks in large part to a phenomenal run by our second leg runner, Emma Lähdekorpi (19th on the leg!), finished in a goal-crushing 87th, 91 places ahead of our finish last year.

The OUSA team had three USA juniors, Izzy Bryant, Addie Nolan, and Anne Wilkenson. I got the impression that they were all wowed by the experience. There's not anything quite like orienteering with 1200 other women!

There was also Tori Owen (CAN) on leg 3 for Sävedalens AIK 3, as well as an unknown American living in Helsinki whom I met at the shoe washing station.

I was going to do Jukola teams as well but I need to go to work. :-)

If you go here
http://results.jukola.com/tulokset/en/haku/
you can search the results for individual runners.

It looks like Eric Kemp was 68/1433 and Ross Smith was 104/1433---well done!

Although not "North American" Neil Dobbs (137/1433) lived here several years ago and did quite well.

Got my pics up finally. At least two above mentioned people can be found from them:
http://hirppa.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Suunnistus/2014/14_06...
http://hirppa.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Suunnistus/2014/14_06...

I normally have quite loose copyright policy but this time it's strict (one of the next Jukolas bought exclusive rights to some of the pics). So ask me for any use of them.

Thanks. First time I was at a control point in Jukola during the "night". Can't say that was easy :)

Yes, thanks for the pictures, especially out in the terrain. I've seen the maps so it's nice to get a sense for what the woods are like

Could ONA get rights to use that photo of Sam in the magazine? That's a fantastic photo, and it would be great to share more widely with all of the USA orienteering community!

I asked the rights owner and they don't oppose. Please send me an email (address at the bottom of the folder view at my page) and I'll send the original jpg. That's rather compressed.

Great! Thanks! acjospe at gmail dot com. I'll make sure Donna (ONA editor) credits you on the page.
