... you went to somewhere near the junction of four trails about 250m NW of 119 thinking to take the trail making a beeline just south of due west for ~400m into the general vicinity of 107 and 109, got onto one of the less beeline-y trails just north or south of it (I'm assuming south given where you ended up) and presumably when you realised you weren't on the intended trail jumped to the wrong conclusion as to which trail you were on. Does that sound right to you?

I forget whether you currently own a working GPS that could clear up exactly what happened. You didn't borrow a club one and I don't recall whether you ever said you got a new one - just that one or more buttons on the one you had for a while weren't working.

Yes, that's correct. I didn't notice the first trail on the map so I took the first left when I should have taken the second left. Then when I realized my mistake I tried turning north but (without realizing it) wound up back on the same trail I had just left. If I had continued north I should have arrived at the correct E/W trail.

I have uploaded my track to RouteGadget.

It's kind of amazing, looking at the track, how short a distance one can become disoriented in but we've all been there, with varying recovery times. Did you consider bailing out to the road a little bit west of 107? It probably would have been a much smaller time loss that what you did, although larger than if you had managed to relocate where you were within a minute or two.

I didn't consider taking the road, not because I didn't think it was a good option but because it just didn't occur to me.
