Don't forget to bring your donations for the Silent Auction to the meet on Sat. 4/26. Baked goods are especially great, there will be lots of hungry collegians in attendance!
Bring your salable items to the meet site on Saturday!

I thought the '93 crystal was from the Czech team? This is a pretty famous item...should bring a big sum. Can someone post the back story?

The crystal is indeed the entry payment from the Czech team for the '93 WOC held in NY. It had resided in the leftovers from that meet for many years, before we acquired it. I briefly entertained the thought of using it for the USA entry to the WOC in Czech a few years ago.
We had it appraised a few months ago, estimate was about $250. Note that it comes with a very limited edition 1993 WOC water bottle!

The Czech crystal….

Was there more than one? Perhaps? Perhaps not?

At some point during the O'fest (the public races held in conjunction with WOC), there were a bunch of Czechs who wanted to enter one day of the O'fest, I think the day just after the last WOC event. This took place the evening before. I think there were about 15 of them.

The leader came to see me with all the names and classes. No problem. But there was the matter of the fee. Entry fee was $15 a person, plus there was a late fee of $15 per person. And, given the budget we were operating under -- actually there was no budget, just the instructions to spend as little as possible and take in as much as possible -- well, we'd already had a good day selling a ton of maps at the WOC relay and this seemed like a nice little extra bonus income, $450.

But the thing was that the Czech leader didn't want to pay in cash. Instead he offered this large piece of crystal. Can't remember exactly what, I'm sure Gail remembers, obviously I had no idea what it was worth. According to him, of course, it was worth a lot. And also according to him, they didn't have much cash.

He was quite persuasive, but I was not to be persuaded, and at some point he reached in his pocket and pulled out a large wad of bills, and peeled off four 100s from the outside and a 50 from the inside.

I never knew what happened to the crystal. Was it the same one as this one now up for auction? Did he pawn it off on someone else?
