I just came across this (was searching for a map of the East Greenbush Town Park which I just drove by) - http://rensco.com/events.asp

The top listing is:

"Tuesday, April 29, 2014 (10:00 a.m. - N/A)
Community Event
Location: Grafton Lakes State Park.
Description: Orienteering Basics at 10am. Read an orienteering map and explore the park with the aid of a compass. You’ll get some basic skills so that you’ll never truly be “lost in the woods!” Meet by main beach parking lot. Pre-registration required: 279-1155. $2/person. Suggested age is10 & older for this program. "

Wondering if anyone has heard of it, was this the work of anyone we know? I'd be curious to hear how it went.

Park Naturalist Liz Wagner gave this course. A number of years ago (5? or so) we had an event there and in return for waiving the park use fee Glen designed a couple of permanent courses. They installed the markers with our guidance. I think Liz has held classes using them before this one. There may be comments from attendees on the Meet Up site (see below).

Since I contacted her re: our meet on May 24, she suggested I join Grafton's Meet Up group so I could be listed as "host" for the event which she added to the calendar (that way I could edit what was written too). There are several from the Meet Up group who've said they'll attend our event.

It's free to join Meet Up. There's a cost to have a group like Grafton's (not huge, just another site to maintain...).

East Greenbush Town Park is tiny and mostly open, much like Schodack Town Park. If we ever developed a Sprint Series, some of these tiny parks would probably be great venues (if there were small or no park use fees); non-professional maps would probably be sufficient. Other towns have similar ones, I'm sure (Greenport near Hudson, Crellin near Chatham, etc.).

Promoting/advertising is the key, and our Achilles heel.

Thanks for the info., Janet. I came across that same map that you linked (the East Greenbush Town Park map..) and came to the conclusion that it was probably too small for an event. The sprint series idea sounds interesting though..

At any rate, I love the arrangement you described between the park folks and EMPO - not just for the waiving of the park fee, but for the price of Glen's efforts we now have someone else in the area promoting orienteering on an ongoing basis! Great stuff.
