I wish I could hit a long drive that meant something. Sadly, my long drive is completely bogus. I was playing a downhill par-5 in the late summer of 1996, which was a drought year so the fairway was basically concrete. I only carried about 230, but the ball didn't stop rolling until 350.

Actually, I forgot the best part of this one --

Play was at a rather leisurely pace, and we had to wait some before hitting, time enough for the twosome after us to arrive. We were waiting in the next to highest teebox, just taking in the view, and the other two drove up to the top, also to take in the view, they were playing from shorter tees.

So when the coast was clear, we ambled up to the top, where John was hitting from. And it takes a certain panache to hit from the way back tees, especially when there are spectators. And he just crushed it. And then we drop down to the next tee and Peter and I just nail ours, and then Gail hits a good one from lower down.

Always a good feeling to hit it well when you're being watched. Don't get that sensation very often in O'.
