Old Daniel:
I will write up some comments about the whole series at the end -which so far overall I have thought has been pretty good.
Concerning Penpole (i) execution- there are always background reasons why things go wrong but (ii) what about the whole idea?
We have known for 25 years+ that from June-Sept most of the woods in the SW are grotty but periodically we still insist in trying this out and the results are predictable. The Urban and Park series works because its just that. A race around Lawrence Weston with a few controls in Penpole with route choice round the major tracks might just have worked. (Leigh Woods was fine because its basically forest tracks.) Not all venues will work. (e.g. Burrington Ham in Summer??)
(iii) The Club Champs +BBQ needs time and is probably much better at the w/e. This does not mean it does not mean it can not be part of the series. Ref Chris Johnson & Frenchay.
Perhaps club committee need to consider (ii) & (iii)

re: (iii) I believe the committee did or will be considering this as it had been raised by others... I didn't make the last meeting so not sure what was actually discussed/agreed if anything

... and agree it needs to be at the w/e

re: (ii) totally agree
