This weekend in Italy the Canadian team is racing to see who will represent Canada at the 2014 World Champs (WOC).

This year there are new criteria for who gets to run at WOC, with the elimination of the Qualification races in the Middle & Long. Instead Canada has two spots in the Women’s Long & Middle finals, and one spot in the Men’s. Sprint Qualification remains the same, with three spots in the Sprint qualification races available to all countries.

The women’s team is preselected, with Louise Oram (Vancouver) and Emily Kemp (Ottawa) both running in the Middle & Long distance races, and Tori Owen (Calgary) joining them for the Relay. All three women are eligible to run in the WOC Sprint

For the men, Robbie Anderson (Ottawa), Eric Kemp (Ottawa), Will Critchley (Edmonton), Damian Konotopetz (Manitoba/Calgary) are competing for spots at WOC. The winner of the Long & Middle distance selection races will run in those races at WOC and the Relay. There is a points system used to determine the third runner on the Relay team. For the sprint, the top three finishers in this weekend’s Sprint will run the WOC Sprint qualification races.

New this year at WOC is the mixed sprint-relay. Two men and two women will represent Canada, as chosen by the team’s Selection Committee

Will Critchley had a fantastic run in today’s Sprint race at the Alpe Adria cup, finishing top Canadian and just 9 seconds out of third. Will, Damian, and Robbie qualify to race for Canada at the World Champs Sprint.

Will (6th overall and 9 seconds out of third) 17.02
Damian 17.53
Robbie 18.08
Eric 21.17

Tori Owen had a promising run – finishing less than a minute behind Louise Oram in the women’s sprint.

The final selection race is the middle distance race tomorrow. At that race the top Canadian will qualify for the Middle distance final and men’s Relay at WOC. And we’ll have to get out out calculators to figure who will be the third member of the Relay team.

Fantastic stuff from the team in the qualification races

And what promise for the future, with young Michael Svoboda running the sprint in 19:32! Right up there with the team.

Looks like Robbie (38), Eric (47), Will (51), Damian (58), MIchael (63) for the middle if the link in Michael's log to the results is correct (which I assume it is)

Anticipating a couple of questions:
Louise & Emily can run in the Sprint Q if they choose, though they already have a very busy week!
Eric & Robbie by mutual agreement have switched Middle/Long final positions from what they qualified for

Yes, congratulations. Nice to see the teammates switching things around a bit to capitalize on what they think their strengths are. And nice of the organization to let them do it!

Congrats to the team, lots of pressure over a few days but that's sport for you. Some people got races at WOC they wanted and others didn't.

Hope those relay teams do great and stay with the pack!
