I visited 3 schools: first principal wasn't available; second we were greeted so wonderfully and treated "like royalty" - did mapping and field checking there for map for Term 4, taking about an hour; last school - the focus is one I visit every year and much like the scenario you had - usually 30 min slots, about 180 kids in a day called a Sports Expo or Workshop involving about 6 small bush schools. Yesterday was their own last day of AASC (just 1 school) , so as it was just one school knew I could really focus on developing and showcasing their skills. Started with Punch Relays, recap on symbols game and then Line course and then Scatter Course. Great plan - trouble was I only had 6 kids. :-( - no atmosphere but great to really zero in on the kids. 6 Infants kids did another program - lots of kids away sick! Principal away in her Office - ho hum - long day but not as hot as yours.

Yeah, it has got hot, quite quickly. I'm feeling sorry for the chap doing the mapping here (from Vic). Both of you, what are your thoughts on doing things for free with schools vs charging? I don't like the idea of charging for anything that is 'development' and also think this stuff is rather fun to do anyway. But I know some other people view it differently. Do you charge tt? How does it work in NSW?

This was all under the umbrella of Active After School and we can't charge. But that will all come to a grinding halt with funding loss at the end of this year. Then next year it becomes Sporting Schools and each participating school gets funding (on application) for use for school sporting programs.
If a school makes and approach to our club we deal with it on a case by case basis - very often we do it voluntarily and get the schools to print the maps. We've had some bonuses - eg getting school access for club events (saves on toilets, P&C catering etc - our State League in August did this).
If a school approaches ONSW the charge is $8/kid for in-school activities and if on map eg Park or bush have to arrange printing and permissions extra - plus travel for kids so it gets a bit expensive. Some people do it for free - so patchy.
I have a bit of a passion for small schools and access to activities. I still 'lust' after going to central Aus to help out.

Ramping up Sporting Schools is going to be a significant challenge for us. There's a workshop happening on the Monday of nationals week in WA where a lot of ideas will be fleshed out, I expect.

Carolyn - keep in touch - perhaps we can do something together next year at Alice
I'm planning before / after Easter up there probably
Re funding - small NT schools like Timber Creek get the $200 per kid sporting grant to use rather than the kids getting the money, so could access such schools that way - perhaps paying for travel, maps

I believe in a varied approach - private schools generally have better access to money so charge them. Public schools - free at least initially, perhaps funded by clubs. In SA clubs are sitting on big money while participation numbers dwindle - why I ask?

Will do, Yak.
