Was in the Akron-Cleveland area recently, and Bob Boltz of NEOOC was telling me how in an A-meet back in 2002 [?] or so, there was a control placed behind a large rock formation, and folks complained about the narrow passage way to get to it. So i went to check it out, and took a video of the approach. Pretty neat. Hope to stoke some folk's memories...

2004 North American Champs. If people complained it is because they weren't reading their maps well enough. Great area in the cliffs stuff. If anything the courses didn't utilize the rock enough but that was still in the days of 2-day classic.

I know some people who could have validly complained because they literally couldn't fit through that passage. I know others who are claustrophobic enough that they couldn't have done it without freaking out. And there was the potential for some traffic jams, because there's no way that people traveling in opposite directions (one going in, one coming out) could have gotten past each other.

On the map the passageway looks about 10 m wide but in reality it is +/- 1 m .
That seems patently unfair to the competitors. However as I recall the situation was clearly explained in the event notes and while we didn't have that control on the old farts' courses (too many of us couldn't fit through there, I guess) I'd be glad the mapper and controller chose clarity over precision.
What I do remember about that event was the super saturated stream banks and the big tree that had freshly slid about 10 -15 m down and embankment and there it rested just above the stream and still upright. I wonder if it is still there.
