exciting! where you moving to?
Perth. I've got a job as an ocean scientist at the University of Western Australia, working with the radar systems over there. I'd prefer to stay in Queenstown but I can't work part time for minimum wage for the rest of my life (unfortunately) so I think I've finally reached the point where I need to get a real job. It's a sad day.
I read that you might be moving to Melbourne. That would be awesome - Melbourne would definitely be my first choice if I could live anywhere in Australia.
The big bad world awaits. Sounds like an interesting job, my cousin is an oceanography postdoc down in Cornwall - not sure how much similarity there would be? I'm continuously trying to work out how I can go live in the mountains, and yeah think I might be in Melbourne after Christmas.
That's great news, congrats Andrew! You won't get quite so much snow in Perth but it is nice. When do you start?
some good cycling to be done in and around Perth. I have some friends there too (I lived there for 6 months in 2003-04)- let me know when you are heading over there and I can try to connect you.
I'm flying out to Melbourne on Christmas day to hang with the Bakers and run the orienteering in Tasmania - see you there?!
How grown up. Congratulations. So you don't have a big pot of cash from the Poker for your twilight years?
Thanks. I've heard good things about that Crown Casino in Perth, Ben. Lots of the mining workers earn shed loads of money all week and then get drunk and throw it away at the poker table during the weekend! Hopefully they will throw it in my direction - I'll claim it as an environmental tax.
That's great news - nice one.
For UWA the nearest O club is "LOST". Would recommend residing in that general area west of the City and towards Fremantle - less than 10 minutes to the beach from most places and close to Kings Park which has lots of great bush tracks to run on (8km loop around the edge and lots in between).
Thanks for the useful info. I think I will be looking for a place to live in the areas you suggested. Fremantle sounds cool but I guess the longer commute to the uni would get a bit annoying after a while. I spent 24 hours in Perth a few years ago and went for a run in Kings Park. It seemed like a nice area for running and cycling, so I'm looking forward to finding some new excuses to avoid training in a different country!
