PG: So was there any thought to changing the tube at my house, nice pump available, not necessary to risk cardiac arrest to get it up to a decent pressure? Or were you not just totally lazy, but rather stupid too?

To confirm that hypothesis, let me guess -- the old leaky tube is now in your bike bag as your spare?

Were you riding with a NCC group, or just taking one of their routes? Sounds like the latter. I know where I was, the wind really picked up out of the SW by midday. Not being part of the Eric Buckley "bad is good" school of cycling, and perhaps being clever enough to look at the forecast, I would have headed south first and then expected a very pleasant and easy homeward half.

Swampfox: After reading this story, the fact that the FDFs are reputed to favor the Phil can no longer be viewed as any accident. It is well known that FDFs invariably choose the weakest prey that is available.

coach: AND I sincerly hope the pump you had on your bike does NOT have a reversable head, which would have saved your bUtt, but of course not, you checked that ...right?

PBricker: Yeah, Gail even suggested changing the tube at your house. I declined. I figured that I had about 12 miles to go and the tube had held up fine for the first 12 - indeed 25 - miles of the ride. Of course, I knew the assumption that the leak hadn't gotten worse over the course of the ride was a bit shaky. Lazy and stupid tend to go together.

"weakest prey"? Nah, I think I'm just the tallest prey, with the manliest odor.

"reversible head"? I can't say I thought of that, but I don't think so. It's a frame pump I had originally bought a long time ago for a bike with shrader valves.

Charlie: Strangely enough, they teach logic in philosophy departments. Go figure.

PBricker: Indeed, I just taught a math logic course on Godel's Incompleteness Theorems. I'm pretty good at what, in philosophy departments, is called "theoretical reasoning." "Practical reasoning" is another matter. Wreaks havoc with my orienteering too.
