The World Masters Championships are going on this week in Göteborg. Looks like some good results from USA runners in the sprint quali yesterday, with several qualifying for tomorrow's A Final. Here are the ones I could find:
Francois Leonard, BAOC, M40A
Sergeiy Gnatiouk, HVO, M45A
Vadim Masalkov, DVOA, M45A
Greg Balter, DVOA, M50A
Joe Brautigam, WCOC, M50A (Joe is also listed under M50C, so maybe he was disqualified??)
JP Lande, RMOC, M55A
Tom Svobodny, MVOC, M55A
Marie-Josee Parayre, BAOC, W40A
Angelica Riley, DVOA, W45A
Pavlina Brautigam, WCOC, W50A
Sharon Crawford, RMOC, W70A
Good luck tomorrow, everyone! And sorry if I missed anybody.
15 Australians through:
W35: Jo Allison
W40: Natasha Key (2nd qualifier), Jenny Casanova, Clare Hawthorne
W55: Liz Abbott
W65: Libby Meeking
W70: Ann Ingwersen
M35: Simon Rouse
M40: Dion Keech, Blair Trewin
M55: Tim Hatley, Warren Key, Phil Walker
M60: Geoff Lawford, Ted van Geldermalsen
Hard-luck stories of the day were Sue Key and Judy Allison, both of whom repeated my effort last year of picking up the map for the wrong heat, and Su Yan Tay (who would have been a decent medal chance), who misread her start time and missed her start.
I see many A finalist's listed among the C group.
A planning issue with the M55 heats? Seven runners disqualified from Heat 1, and no-one from the other two heats. Seems like there was a trap on Heat 1.
I found this on World of O, translated from Danish:
There was a single trap. In several of the residential quarter, was small grasslands marked as off limits. But the organizers had unfortunately chosen not to mark it in the ground, so it was easy happened that one cut above a prohibited area, if you were not quite sharp in its orientation.
Thanks. A roller-coaster for Heat 1: On the one hand six slower runners get a spot in the final (and congrats to my old mate Gert Nielsen on getting one of those spots); but six who would have easily qualified on time get a DQ. Plus one of those DQ'd earlier gets reinstated and the first start in the final. Sprint continues to be controversial!
Haven't they learned?
I will add that I wasn't there, and it's easy to mouth off on 2nd-hand reports. I would hope that all the heats in a given age class, presented similar challenges.
Gruver, I'll be contesting the sprints at WMOC 2017 so make sure I get a reserved spot in the final please :-)
Warren Key (AUS) 4th!, as Jorgen Martensson wins another World Champs in M55.
GOLD for Australia! Geoff Lawford delivers in M60. Ted Van G in 9th.
SILVER for Australia, another medal for Tash Key in W40.
Best placing for the USA in the sprint is Sharon Crawford, 7th in W70. Way to go, Sharon!
Other 'A' finalists:
W40: Marie-Josee Parayre, 28th
W45: Angelica Riley, 23rd
W50: Pavlina Brautigam, 10th
M40: Francois Leonard, 21st
M45: Vadim Masalkov, 35th
M45: Sergeiy Gnatiouk, 37th
M50: Joe Brautigam, 26th
M50: Greg Blater, 57th
M55: JP Lande, 49th
M55: Tom Svobodny, "felst."
W65A Marg Ellis, GVOC, 6th!!!
Would ken please put this discussion under the WMOC event listing on AP? (Or Boris, maybe you can edit the original post.) Easier to find main link then. Thanks!
Long Qualifier #1 today.
W50-1: Pavlina Brautigam 3rd!
W70-2: Sharon Crawford 2nd!
Looks like Sharon won her heat today! Go Sharon!
Some good results also from Pavlina, Angelica, Wyatt, and Joe.
DNS for Balter. :( Too much bourbon?
I heard Balter tweaked his back yesterday. I have not personally spoken to him though.
Also Sergey G. was injured (back) during the sprint Q.
11 Australian qualifiers that I counted:
W35: Jo Allison
W40: Clare Hawthorne, Jenny Casanova
W50: Su Yan Tay
W55: Liz Abbott
W60: Sue Key
W65: Judi Hay, Judy Allison
M40: Blair Trewin
M60: Geoff Lawford, Ted van Geldermalsen
not enough bourbon, I did not drink before qual, as a result a locked back and a hyper-extended knee (first caused the awkward fall). Done for now. Still in good spirits, though, bourbon helps :)
bourbon is the spirits... nothing like a nice, relaxing bath.
