Discussion: Update on the most hardcore endurance orienteering race, the Hudson Highlander!

I know you've been patiently waiting for some Hudson Highlander XVIII news. Well, the woods are looking gorgeous.



Courses will go through some lovely parts of Harriman State Park, but don't worry, it will be as brutal as you would expect. Are you ready for this metric marathon? If not, the Lowlander will present a decent challenge as well.

This is a mass start race and following is permitted.

Registration will open very soon! Stay tuned.

I am getting prepared, and look forward to a nice run in the woods.

I predict KPop's course will be a cakewalk, with very little suffering.

What is the expected start time for the race? Considering flying to NYC for the weekend and then trying to lumber around 26km of O.

This Fab 5er isn't feeling so fab. I'll try to get through somehow.

I see the handwriting on the wall as to who is likely to be the next to drop, but I don't expect it will be this year.

Hang in there Charlie; we can have a competition for which of us fails first. :-(

Fab Five Bernie has been battling lyme disease all summer. I'm getting better but I may have to be carried part of the course. Is that allowed?

These crazy souls were strong and brave enough to finish all of the previous Highlanders. These experienced orienteers are clearly the ones to follow.

HH is a little over two weeks away! I know you're curious to find out which Harriman maps will be used this year.

Will it be the magnificent, highly technical Surebridge map that was used for the Long WOC 1993 course?
Will it be Polebrook, the map that was used for the Middle and Relay courses in WOC 1993?
Or will it be the blueberry-infested Silvermine for added torture?
Or maybe the course will go through the abandoned Sebago beach?
How about through bear-sighted Lake Welch?
Rockhouse? Jackie Jones?

State your guesses. Anyone who correctly identifies the three maps will receive a special gift from the course-setter.

I was going to say Baileytown -- it's been a long time since we went there!
Okay, guess I still will: Baileytown, Silvermine, Surebridge.
Though the last HH was entirely on Silvermine so probably not...

I didn't even know there was a distinct map called Lake Welch. Does it overlap at all with Rockhouse and/or Jackie Jones or is there a full map's worth of mapped Harriman terrain I've never run on (leaving aside all but the northernmost bit of Sebago Beach)?

Lake Welch is sort of the overlap area between Jackie Jones and Rockhouse, but it was refieldchecked as an ISSOM map for a Team Trials a while back. It was used as the last leg of the Highlander four years ago (kind of as a novelty). It covers the area between the lake and Lake Welch Drive, but as I recall doesn't go as far as the campground.

Can I take a guess?

Sebago surebridge rockhouse

As much as I hate to admit, indeed, Joe, those are the maps. As the winner of this contest you will receive a personalized pat on the back from the course-setter.

Maybe you will receive an actual prize of some sort as well.

Are those the maps that everyone gets or just Joe? Or maybe everybody but Joe? There's a rumour going around after all that Joe is getting special maps...
