My husband and I will be attending both the EMPO meet and the UNO meet and are working on plans for the week. We currently have reservations in Bar Harbor, Maine for Tuesday and Wednesday night with plans to visit Acadia National Park. Other suggestions? What to do between Albany and Bar Harbor? What to do between Bar Harbor and Hancock?

Well, the LL Bean store in Freeport ME is an interesting place. But, if you'll be buying stuff, do that at the LL Bean Outlet store which is a short walk from the main store.

Plenty of lidar over Acadia National Park. I did some remote terrain scouting year ago:

Not to sidetrack the discussion (hah!) ... are those the std Karttapullautin 2.5m contours, Jagge? Nice one!

I've recently been using KP for pre-race trail running maps, when I'm not familiar with the course and there's been no published climb values:

1:30k, 10m contours. Yes, yes, the yellow is hideous. But the merge of OpenStreetMap data and colors and Karttapullautin was visually difficult ... so it served its purpose. ;)

While you're in Acadia, you might wish to become familiar with the 57-miles of 100-yr old car-free Carriage Roads and Bridges....something unique to Maine.

Hike the beehive trail in Acadia :)

Also - keep an eye out for peregrine falcons.

Eat lobster. Drink fall pumpkin beer.

If you're interested in viewing any lighthouses, drop me (or Nancy) a line for recommendations.

Arcadia is great we just spent a week there, hiked, kayaked and rode the carriage roads. Plus lots of good eating and drinking in Bar Harbor. Free buses around the park until the end of the month make for cross over walks and rides without hassle

How about the Mt. Washington Cog Railway? Is that nice? Husband won't do strenuous hikes, only about 1 or 2 miles if it's pretty flat. Will definitely look into the carriage roads, sounds cool.

Mt. Washington can be very nice if the weather is good, although that time of year the train might be crowded if it's a good day. But on a weekday, maybe not so much of a problem. (I've never been on the cog railway, though I've seen it when I've been up on the mountain.)

Yes, the cog railway would be good and the ride itself is unique. We did it when the kids were little and the top of the mountain was totally socked in... But, even so, there is a nice, comfy museum at the top with interesting stuff'. I think we reserved tickets ahead of time.

And while you are in that area, you could walk around grounds of the Mt. Washington Hotel (or even stay there though it's probably pricey, explore the flume and see where the Old man in the mountain used to be.

If you like rustic accommodation you could try the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. It's not too far from Mt. Washington and run by Dartmouth College. Info is here:
