Copied from the event page:
Senior Team Trials will be based around Kent, CT. It is likely that both the middle and long will take place on Pond Mountain, though there is a small chance that one of the races may move to Macedonia State Park, which is adjacent.
Sprint venue still to be confirmed, presume Friday night. This is likely to be nearer the coast. I therefore suggest, if you're super keen on booking accommodation in advance, to go with the Danbury area. Once the sprint venue is confirmed I will go about trying to get a group booking in one of the affordable hotels near Danbury.
There is pleasant camping at Housatonic Meadows, though I can't guarantee it will be quiet all night at this time of year. There are hotels closer than Danbury, but these are mostly country inn style and more expensive.
I will post details as soon as they are confirmed - permissions so far have been a bit of a pain and I'm sorry it has taken this long. No website/entry form yet - will make sure this is well advertised when it's time. Any questions, let me know, I'll see if I can answer them.
Thanks for the info! Race schedule is S-L-M?
Camping is also possible at Macedonia though more rustic. Sites can be reserved in advance.
Jun 3rd - 5th - it's on the event page.
I also should mention that there will be a single course each day - one for women and one for men. Anyone can participate on these courses, but no others will be offered.
Thanks. I always appreciate when people starting a thread include the date so I don't have to click a link to see if it is even possible to attend and therefore worth my time to bother reading more.
Thanks for opening this up to non-trialers... I hope to be there...
Clicking on a link, the bane of all time poor orienteers! You should change your name to Mike Minimum (clicking).
It's a good reminder for organizers to include dates when sharing key event details. I've been guilty of forgetting that. It's surprising how many events (not this one) have no date even on their home page.
I upvote the very minimal details. Thanks!
Re: dates in the Racing thread.
Perhaps it would make sense for Ken to add dates to the front page. For example, this thread would look like:
Very minimal first details
Senior Team USA Trials (June 3-5, 2016)
Thanks so much for putting on this event!
Would anyone be travelling early enough that having some training controls out on adjacent Macedonia would be a good addition to a model section of map for the races?
Yes! I'm flying into JFK on May 31st. Definitely beneficial for me.
Thanks Greg! If there's a couple more yesses out there I will go talk to the DEEP.
Just a non-trials hanger on... but I could well come out for midweek training... close enough...
There is a set of permanent markers at Macedonia. Maps could be provided.
The permanent markers may not have been updated or checked since I left CT 7 years ago. At the same time, a WOC candidate should know if they got to the control even though it wasn't there. If appropriate, I can probably find a map with those control locations.
I have the map and a plentiful supply of the area maps, all nicely offset printed at 1:15000.
@guy and walk. Funny, I was looking at the Southwest Spring Week hiking thread when I posted that. No idea how it ended up in the wrong thread. It's now in the correct place.
Hi! A few of us are looking to arrive in the area on Wednesday and train (some of us from abroad may have forgotten what it's like to orienteer back home!). Can it be confirmed that both races are on Pond Mountain and about 4 of us could train on Macedonia (I assume with a small group is ok without a permit?)?. If not (or even if so), can anyone suggest other maps in the area that would have similar terrain that would be good training maps? We're also looking for a place to stay (for 7 adults and a baby) if anyone has recommendations!
Oh, I also just read the above about training controls - Yes, Please!! :)
Yes, I confirmed to Linda at the weekend, both forest races are at Pond Mountain.
Macedonia is a great area for training - but if you want them out on Wednesday, you're going to have to do that amongst yourselves - I can't get up there that early. I can plan some model controls and provide maps though. That's the best map for likeness of terrain, and you can probably get two days training out of it.
Also, if you're staying near Danbury, Tarrywile is good too!
I can help with training at Tarrywile and/or Paugussett if you decide to go there.
As mentioned above, I have a big supply of the Macedonia maps. Let me know how many you might need and where to send them.
I can take the Macedonia maps to distribute.
By any chance is the Macedonia map available online somewhere / via email?
I would love to train in Tarrywile or Paugussett if possible: could I somehow get hold of a pdf or ocad file to design a multitechnique training session there?
If people are interested, I'm planning on training there on Wednesday (early afternoon) and could print a few extra maps or even design partner exercises.
Might be a silly question but i'm just emerging from Exams haha.... how/where do we enter?
Registration will be open on eventreg soon, as in hopefully this week.
Ah perfect! thanks Ed and thanks for helping sort it all! you and becky are too good to the senior team.
I was the person who made the original Pond Mt. map that was expanded by Mark Dominie for an A-meet, now National Meet. I also made the Macedonia map with an extension for a later Billygoat. (My house was the aid stop for the Billygoat because it was on the map.) I will suggest that the mapping and terrain for both maps is similar, not exactly the same. Paugussett and Tarrywile are not as similar so Macedonia would be the map of choice to train on. Pond Mt. and Macedonia have large hills with boulders, the vegetation boundaries are sometimes obvious but other times not unless it is dark green that is mountain laurel. If you go to Macedonia, the pond on the west side is very nice although not easily accessible but that area is worth going to. There is one place on the west side of the Macedonia map where there is a pit that will lure your compass but it only affects an area of about 10 meters in diameter. There is one pit on the Pond Mt. map that has similar issues but otherwise magnetic anomalies are not an issue.
I agree with Peter - Tarrywile and Paugusset are good maps, but the mapping style of Pond Mountain is very Swedish and quite different to those two maps. (This will be covered in the meet notes, it's not secret information!). So Macedonia is the priority, but if you're coming for a whole week or so beforehand, those other two will be fun.
