Is there any info on the Sunday morning event at Lac Phillipe? Eg time, course type and lengths? Unless I am missing it (always possible), the website seems to have time info for Fri and Sat but not Sun.

The Camp in general as well as the race on Sunday will feature specific substance for elites.

40 years ago. My Gosh! F-O-R-T-Y YEARS!! 1976 that is when the first Orienteering Ottawa competition was held at Lac Phillippe. Reading about this training camp got me looking through my photo albums and through my 1976 map book. What a year that was! Besides selection races for the National team, helping with mapping and course setting for two days of the O'Ring Quebec 5 -Days, spending a week camping with my family at Lac Phillippe while doing field work for a large chunk of the map, going to Scotland for WOC '76 then the COCs at Lac Phillippe in early October. No worries about Global warming that weekend. It was bloody cold - freezing rain on the Saturday, snow over night and just cold and wet on the Sunday. I remember the OOC volunteers meeting on Sa\turday for dinner in Wakefield and then checking soggy control cards later that night. Sunday my job was to sit out at a control and check cards to make sure everyone were doing the longer courses in order. Cold wet and hung over. That pretty well sums it up. The only bright spot was meeting Charlie Fox of BC attending his first COC. What a character!
Now if anyone feels like trying one or more of those wonderful courses I still have the maps. If you feel like coming early or staying longer just let me know and I will provide you with a 1976 vintage 1:15,000 map of terrain on the east side of trhe lake - away from the current map. We'll work out a map fee payable to Orienteering Ottawa.

I actually ran on at least one of your courses at O'ring Quebec in 1976. I suppose you were setting the courses at Camp Fortune and Meach Lake for day 2 and 4.

I don´t remember much in detail other than it was hot and sunny and that my performance (according to results) must have been sub-par at 30 min's behind the winner on day 2. I DNF'd on day 3 so I may not have run at Meach Lake (?).

What I do remember is that I from then on helped to organize instead and spent most of the night before day 5 calculating total times and start times for the chase start.

That sounds like you bubo, willing to step in and help out at the drop of a hat, even if it means you need to sacrifice your own racing schedule. Seems like it is pretty true even today!

...and in those days I don´t think computers were even invented... (at least not for meet organizing).

We had to calculate "manually" and to complicate matters the timing system used presented results in 100th's of a minute*. Since the start clock was plain seconds we had to "translate" that to be able to present a legible start list for officials and competitors alike.

So one person says it was freezing cold with rain and snow and another one says it was hot and sunny. I think that's evidence of global warming right there.

Two different events tRicky. One was the international O'Ring Quebec in August held concurrent with the Montreal Olympics. A whole bunch of Swedes attended not so much for the orienteering as to watch their hero, Anders Garderud win the steeplechase gold medal. It can get very hot in Montreal in August.
The other was the Canadian Orienteering Championships held in October in the Lac Philippe area north of Ottawa. It can get very cold in Ottawa in October.

While some on this thread are focused on events of a few decades ago, should be noted that Ottawa has really stepped up as main feeder for the Canadian National Team. Currently about 30% of the Canadian HPP are athletes from Ottawa and expect to see a big crowd at North Americans this fall as well as hopefully on the Canadian WOC Team.

Too bad that this camp competes with US Team Trials, but can't win them all, will try to avoid US competitions next year if possible.

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed about the clash. Was hoping for a decent number of Canadians to visit.
