Excellent!
Other North Americans at Euro Champs?

Will C is also there. He ran the sprint quali, sprint B final, and the long quali. It seems like he decided not to run the long final B final today (like a lot of other racers).

Way to go Emily. Nice job. (Although I didn't know Canada was a European country. But if Australia can enter the Eurovision Song Contest, I guess anything is possible.)

Big congrats to you Emily! Go Canada!!

Any Australians there? Or busy working on next year's song..

Working on there singing ;)

The EOC is also counted in the world cup so therefore all countries are able to participate (but not win medals in EOC).

Don't know about Aussies, but the kiwi Tim R had a great run in the sprint ending up in the 7th position.

Terje Mathisen:
The rule is that the 17 best from each heat qualifies for the final, then if there are any non-euro runners among they add the same number of the following euro competitors. I.e. The 17 best euro, plus all non-euro in the top 17.

Tim R came 20 in his long Q heat, which is actually quite nice for a first year senior. :-)

Looks like Emily just qualified for the middle finals with a 7th in the A heat. Way to go!
May 27, 2016 3:45 PM #
rlindzon:
Watching the live results on the Middle. It's looking like a 3rd or 4th for Emily (tied with one other at no. 15). But 2nd place is showing no split for no. 20.

fletch:
4th it is
May 27, 2016 3:50 PM #

Emily was 4th. Judith Wyder made a big comeback in the last part of the race.
Great job by Emily!

only 19 seconds out of a medal. Goood job Emily
May 27, 2016 4:05 PM #

A whole continent (or ocean) out of a medal actually - but still a great result!
May 27, 2016 4:13 PM #
Canadian:
Bubo, a whole continent out of a EOC medal but she still would have gotten a WC medal no?
May 27, 2016 4:18 PM #

I don´t think they get medals at WRE/WC?

she has got to be the gold medal favourite for NAOC M21 ;-)

Wonderful results in both Middle and Long.
May 27, 2016 6:46 PM #
Rosstopher:
Kempster for sure outsprinted me the last time I raced her in a finish chute, I'd put money on her if she decided to run M21 at NAOC!

That being said... the F21 class is a tougher nut to crack ;)

jjcote:
19 seconds from a podium position, does that sound better?
May 27, 2016 8:53 PM #

Except the podium is the top six ;)

Last fall, when she visited Ottawa, she beat all our top guys, including her brother Eric.

I'm so happy for Emily! Two top 10 WC results just days apart! Exactly 30 years and 10 days ago fellow Cdn Denise DeMonte placed 4th in the Dundas Valley World Cup. But the sport is very different today.

A WOC top 10 and podium is in reach for Emily!!

brilliant news - way to go Emily!

Terje Mathisen:
The fastest D21E girls in the world are about even with the best M45/M50 runners, i.e. someone like Jörgen Mårtensson would still be about equal to Simone Niggli when he was about to turn 50.

This is actually much less of a difference than it sounds like when you consider that Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg came second in the EOC Long distance and was one of the three fastest runners in the WOC Long last year (but there she made a huge error at the end of the longest leg). She has turned 40 now so that's only a 10-year gap between men and women.

PS. The I got the "D21E equals M50" comparison from Anne Margrethe a year or two ago. :-)

Go Emily!

Very nice for Emily: shame she can't run for Queen and country.

@terje The WOC middle champion is also as fast as a top W40. Due to the lack of available W21s to test run, that course was set for top M50s.

Nice going Emily!!!
I didn't watch the whole TV race coverage but I heard her name mentioned a lot and she shows up at about 50:50 running into the finish (she looked very strong), and than a brief interview (in English), at 54:45

@Bubo

"Emily's been doing so well lately that it was just a matter of time..."

Several times recently I've noticed that Emily has been left off of the list of competitors to get GPS trackers. Particularly noticeable at the WOC test races earlier this year where Emily finished second. When will the organizers learn that just because she's from Canada...?

Emily was also shown in the Finnish evening sports newscast between soccer and track & field. Take a look starting at 5:50.

Those of you who are big golf fans may notice a simila\rity between Emily and another young woman from the Ottawa area who is taking the women's professional golf world by storm, Brooke Henderson. Brooke recently won one of the major golf tournaments in the USA.
The first similarity is their very big smiles and coolness under pressure.
Another similarity was their approach to recent wins. Both were asked on TV about the wins and beating the other girls. Emily's response was that it was more important to her that she had a good clean run without mistakes and that she could handle the course physically.
Brooke Henderson's response to questions about her recent win was very similar. She was happy that she had made the shots she needed to make.
It seems both would have been just as happy with their own performance if one or two others had performed better on the day. That I think is a very important lesson to all who go in to a competition with a 'win at all cost attitude'. It sure seems a good way to dampen down the pressure on themselves.
Best wishes going forward ladies.

Good point about focusing on one's own game.

It's wonderful to have a North American racing so well.

So after the last race in the 2016 Finnish Top League, Emily Kemp is the overall winner. A pretty amazing achievement! Adding a few thousand Euros to the bank account as well ;)

Emily was 7th in the sprint that concluded the 2016 league last weekend. Lots of coverage of Emily in the TV broadcast as she is running in the yellow leader's bib.
