Discussion: COME AND GET IT

in: UKR Gators O Cup #5 Starkey Hills North (Feb 26 - Puslinch, ON, CA)

As I mentioned in another thread, the Guelph Gators (now UKR Gators) are holding an O Cup event at the glorious Starkey Hills, just southeast of Guelph.

Click on the event page above for all the details and to register.

A couple map snippets to wet your whistles...

Terrain we will be using, (old map):

Piece of the actual course, (2006 map...without minor adjustments):

It looks like it will be quite mild this coming weekend, so barring any precipitation next week, the snow cover will be gone...making for some faster running.

We will have chili! We will have vegan soup!

Vintage Gators map and free rye bread for all participants!

Come get your 'technical control picking through enchanted forest' itch scratched!!

Big thank you to everyone at TOC and UKR for supporting/hosting/posting our registration page. Much appreciated!

Info and registration might be here:

Or here:

Link on AP event page goes directly to registration.

The linked page has some stuff about "handicap" and "bones" but no basic info that I could easily find about what kind of an event it is. Is there a web page about the series as a whole that might give me an idea of how long it is and what kind of event it is (point to point orienteering?).

Did a little more hunting before posting, and found some of what I was looking for here:

"Control picking long-ish middle mania!! 4.7 - 7.8 km, (depending on your handicap)."

But still it would be nice to have a little more info about what all this means, and on the website of the event rather than buried in an ancillary AP thread.

There is an O Cup Series web page although it looks like the info needs some updating.

Each race in the series works a bit differently so specific details are normally included on the event web page.

The O Cup is a series of mass start events which have taken place (for over 20 years now), throughout the winter in and around the Golden Horseshoe of Ontario.

Every event uses some sort of score-like box, (within a traditional point to point course). We have made a subjective algorithm based on age and sex in order to even out the field, with the idea that anyone can win.

Specifically for this race, you (o-maps) would have to complete 2 of the 6 dogbones based on your age and sex.

Knowing the course, I can say the point to point piece is about 4.7km with 18 controls...and an extra 1km or so (4 more controls), depending on how you (o-maps) visit the dogbones...

Hope that helps!

Sorry for the confusion...thanks for your interest!

While the link above works, the link on the Orienteering Ontario website doesn't. It goes to the GGO facebook page.

Link fixed, thanks for letting us know Ralph.

It's looking mighty lovely at Starkey Hills!

The snow is slowly melting and will most likely be gone by race day. (Temperatures are supposed to be between 5 and 13 Celsius all week.)

The course will surely be a treat for those planning on racing!

Many areas which are normally too thick to enjoy running through from spring to fall, will be a joy to run through next Sunday.

If you are unable to register by the 25th, we will have plenty of maps available on race day. Email me if that's the case.

Hope to see you at this classic venue!
