Back by popular request :-)
Sunday, Oct 1, somewhere at Harriman State Park.
Permit pending. Courses set by Joe B.
Looking forward to it and hoping I can attend!
Joe, please put in lots of gratuitous climb.
....only on Bernie's map...
You can do as much gratuitous climb as you please, Bernie. (Like the year that Charlie was King of the Wrong Mountain.)
That was certainly a long time ago!
plenty of climb on this years K/Q of the MT. might actually be the most ever.
Now might be a good time to post the current stats, J-J.
What stats would you like? I have them all, but not a good place to post them. If you want just tidbits, I could list them here.
Longest first control split? Or possibly the largest ratio of first control time to total course time.
Splits do not exist for the early years, but unless somebody blew a first control badly, the opening leg that went clear across Silvermine is clearly where that must have happened.
4km opening leg across Silvermine was my first attempt at setting HH. stay tuned for 2nd try.
Serious request, though, Joe: more water at the water stops than last time. It was pretty discouraging to get to the one at the end of the trail run and find just empty jugs, and to realize that the last one was almost certain to be dry as well.
got it. every 6km enough?
Just to re iterate JJ's request, he asked for MORE water at the stops, not more stops. My experience is if there are more stops, everyone drinks at each one, so though there may be more water out there, each stop has less and the water is drunk by each passing competitor.
However often you have the stations, make sure each one has enough water for all the competitors by whatever formula you come up with. ( I typically figure 8oz./competitor, then add another gallon, maybe 2 if it is hot.)
Problem with using a formula like that for the HH is that people who carry water bottles or bladders tend to fill them up.
Yeah. They shouldn't do that. It should be allowed if the race comes through the finish/assembly area, as it frequently does, or maybe at a "big" manned aid station. Otherwise, no.
Then again, as organizer I've sometimes encouraged participants to carry bottles or bladders, and refill at one or two specific points. It depends what's easier. Orienteers carrying their water can potentially save the organizer carrying it to several remote water stops. For a longer event, if it makes things easier, that's a reasonable condition I think.
It ought to be pretty easy to get a lot of water to the map change points. There was only one manned location at your previous Highlander, and that one (where George and Betsy had their car) had plenty of water. That course was a marvel of parsimony in terms of the control placements, very admirable. Did you ever work out what was the minumum distance for going to all the controls out of order?
It looks like I lost the cluesheet for that course, so I'm not sure where the other water stops were, but I think they were all just off the Palisades, so it was just a matter of how many jugs needed to get dropped off on the shoulder in the middle of the night, to then get lugged in. Bear in mind that in a race like the Highlander, if there are fewer water stops, that's going to increase the likelihood that people will fill up bottles/bladders. If it's every 6 km, you'll probably see a lot of that.
But anyway, a lot more water at the control at the end of the trail run would have solved this problem, I think.
In the process of changing my flight back stateside to arrive in time for the Highlander. I should get in on September 30th. Anyone able to put me up for the night if I can change it?
Train from NYC will get you to Bethel, I can get you to the start.
Will there be a shorter version available this year / rec courses?
Just checking the Highlander is definitely on ?
The first post says "permit pending" - or is that just the USOF permit not the park permit.
definitely!!! permit pending.
