Discussion: Purple Pen & Course with a Shortcut

Hello everyone,

an easy way to offer multiple course lengths in training is to add a shortcut bypassing some controls (like in the legendary sadisti-sunnistus). Is there any way to do this properly in ppen? I've managed to get the course appear the way I like by creating a fork with zero controls in the B variation and then changing that leg to "flagged", but the descriptions are off: only one set is shown, and on the "all variations" map, the sequence numbers are missing. Also, the course name is replaced by "all variations".

I guess this will do if there's no better way, but maybe there is?

I don't know of a proper way - I just put a big purple arrow where the short cut is.

I've done this before! Here's what I do:

1) Design the longest course as its own normal course (no forkings/variations)

2) For the shortcut, add a dashed line. Go to the Add menu, then Line. You can change the appearance of the line. I used Purple for Color, Dashed for Style, and then the default dimensions for a dashed line. Then click and drag that line in between the shortcut controls. (It should look like the flagged route dashed line).

3) Then I usually add a line of text in the control descriptions for each shortcut. For example, if I'm creating Long, Medium, and Short courses, and a shortcut from #3 to #8 to creates the Medium course, then I'd add a line underneath #3 in the descriptions to say "Shortcut from #3 to #8 for Medium Course".

You do this by:
a) Select the row of the last control before shortcut in the control descriptions on the left side of the screen.
b) Add menu, then Text Line...
c) Type the shortcut note. The default position is below the selected row, so you shouldn't need to change that one. You can also specify which courses you want this note to show up on, too.

Just a quick follow-up: we had our session yesterday, two courses with one shortcut each prepared the way @Pink Socks recommended, and it turned out quite well. Thanks again!
