Morning from Latvia, it is nice and cool and wet from rain over night. Blue sky is starting to emerge and looks like a great day for the Middle.
For discussion on the race and the runners!
Have they started - just trying toi pay up and noticed that the early runners seemed to show up on GPS already, then I lost them.
As of 05:23 EDT Alison Crocker is leading among the early starters. She will most likely be the first finisher to the Arena.
The terrain looks a little more challenging
Ali has had a very clean first half. If she holds on from here, she's going to finish in a very good place.
May have been faster using more path to #12, seemed as though the foest was v slow
...or maybe the small path wasn't visible, next runner has crossed right over it.
Why do they keep showing the warm-up area when there are people in the arena run-through?
Better than the tree trunks and leaves shots.
Tove just overshot #2 like Cat Taylor did... and Tove missed #1 as well.
Train wreck, looks like she has run past #3
So cool for Isia!!! And Gemperle. Bummer for Tove, but watch out for her in the long... Our sport is a cruel one.
Looks like one of those maps that looks benign on paper but a different matter on the ground.
I guess mp for Tove is not as bad as 60th.
Good run by Matt Doyle in his first WOC.
Is anyone able to watch the men's stream?
the russian one seems to be going.
Showing all the starters and nothing else is going to bring in a big audience.
sometimes it shows fields as well.
Good call on the russian stream.
Story from T is - she oriented to #3 but found #4 and punched it without realizing it was #4. You saw her shakes to #1 and #2 already. Then oriented to #4 but headed out to nowhere. Came back to #4 after 12 mins and punched, not even realizing déjà-vu. Continued with more uncertainties at #7. At download she was surprised at mispunch and only then understood why she had had such probs to #4.
It's the same link as the English, just click on the "Russian" tab at the top once the stream opens
The English stream is going well too. Much better than before.
Yeah, mine's back working well now.

Just joined ... wow, looking very green out there.

Nice terrain, yet doable for Americans
That is what contours and vegetation should look like on the map in a typical water-erosion type
Looks a lot like Letchworth from the map.
Cameraman giving away location of 13?
Oh oh, Lundanes in a scenic loop ...
No more than the path or massive clearing behind it. It let's you know you're near, but it won't tell you were exactly the control is.
Super frustrating, yes Letchworth might be like Latvia, but With one entry, the US mens runner lives closer to actual Latvia than NY state.
Is Kinneberg catching Howald?
He is eating up his 2 min tail!
I think it's very close between them.
Woo ... exciting finishes!
And how marvelous that I live in a time where I can watch this live from the other side of the planet ... cool.
I agree that this was very cool indeed. In the women's class Marianne Andersen missed the first control by 90 sec, then ran faster than everyone else except the winner from that point and ended up in 8th place just 50 sec from silver (which is the place she got last year).
In the men's class it was heartbreaking to watch Lundanes forget about his compass, possibly he exited the previous control in the wrong direction because he entered from above right, i.e. is angle was about the same as the map angle?
OTOH it was extremely nice to see Eskil Kinneberg get his first individual gold! Without him this would have been a clean sweep for the Swiss. They will be tough in the relay on Thursday!
Yes good effort from Anderson - she even got caught by her 2 min runner and they made a nice little silver medal foursome. But other than that, the 2min start interval seemed to work a bit better in avoiding big groups.
Mens race was terrifically exciting with the three last starters - how much fun can you have watching a little dot trying to catch someone's 2min tail. Plus some imagination.
Yes, much more Letchworth than I was anticipating. But, I expect the long to be different.
On another note--excuse my ignorance, but are the Bassets siblings? If so, can some O historian let me know when another pair of siblings produced equivalent results in the same discipline/race at a single WOC?
Well, there were two Kyburzes in the top five just on Saturday in the sprint...
There were two Kyrgyztanis recorded as OT in the WMTBOC today.
Kyburzes aren't exactly kibitzers, so I guess that counts...
You can read about Anton's and Ali's races on our blog:

Thanks for the excellent updates and good luck in the relay tomorrow!
Maybe the most notable moment was Tove making huge mistake and TV commentator Minna K saying she knows the feeling.
Oh wow, is Minna doing TV commentary for YLE? So cool!
She did for middle, with Markku Mäkäräinen and always excellent Janne Salmi. Don't know will she do more, hopefully does.
J-man: today twin sister of N.Gemperle won middle at WMTBOC-2018.
@Jagge: this S-1 Hardest leg ever?

The next time out, Kauppi anchored the relay team to a gold medal. Next move Tove ..
Right, France was they mentioned, not the actual leg but they did not have to. Markku asked Janne about his mistakes of same magnitude, he said not recently, but about 1977 when he was a little boy he got lost so badly a farmer ended up driving him back to TC.
Thats excatly what Tove will most likely do in relay.
(the anchor thing, not the farmer mistake...)
