HVO Sanctioned National Ranking Event for 2019 will be held at Ward Pound Ridge on Saturday June 1st, the same place we held the 2016 US Championships but using the northern part of the map. This ½ of the Park has been hardly used since the map was updated in 2015/16, and most parts of the map are virgin territory. It has been embargoed since the event was sanctioned.
The area is mainly open and very runnable, except for small area of barberry, easily avoided, and has many rock features.
Course setter is Niels Olsen who set day two of the 2016 Championships.
Pre-registration is not required but it would help us in map printing and computer input if you could email me at ‘ghckat at Yahoo.com’ with name, age, club and SI number.
First starts for competitive runners will be 9.30 and last starts at 12.00, Rec starts will be from 10.30. Start times will not be pre-allocated but we will keep a gap between runners on the same course.
More details will be on HVO website http://hvorienteering.com/wp/
If you are interested in staying in one of the shelters at the Park Friday and/or Saturday let me know as soon as possible as the Park cannot take phone/credit card bookings so it would have to be done through me. There are only 5 shelters free for Saturday night as of this morning. $50 per night.
To make the weekend more attractive we will be holding a sprint event on Sunday June 2nd on Governors Island. This island, never before used for orienteering, is about 800m off the bottom of Manhattan, reached by a short ferry ride. More details at https://govisland.com/
. The new map has been compiled by Stefan Slutsky, who is also setting the courses. This will be a local meet with local meet low fees.
