The Hudson Highlander is an ultimate test of navigation and endurance. Metric marathon, 26.2 km, in beautiful Harriman State Park is not for the faint of heart. The precise location for check-in and parking will be announced in the week prior to the event.

Registration is now open Here

It's generally agreed that the BBQ at the Highlander is the best Post Race Feast offered at any orienteering event in the world. This year's BBQ will continue this well earned honor!

Can someone explain "metric marathon"? It makes no sence to me. I have always thought that marathon refers to one specific distance. There is no metric lightyear, which is only 5.88 trillion km.

JanetT:
Marathon is 26.2 miles. This event is 26.2 km, because orienteering distances are metric.

You are absolutely right that "metric marathon" makes no sense. If there were really a metric marathon, maybe it would be 40 km.

It's basically just a joke that we've been perpetuating for 24 years. (Hey, the Surebridge map is now a marathon of years old!) Although... in terms of effort, running a km through the woods is roughly like running a mile on pavement. So the Highlander is about as hard as running a marathon, and maybe takes about the same amount of time.

Fortunately, the weather forecast looks good. It won't get down to marathon Fahrenheit at night, and won't climb to marathon Celsius during the race.

It’s not just us. I ran a road race many years ago that was called a metric marathon and was 26.2 km.

“ Total Distance 26.1 km; climb 865 m (trail run is about 245 m additional).” It’s a very small point, but just curious why the climb is listed this strange way. Is it just to avoid putting the big scary number (1110 m, or if you prefer, about 1/22 of a vertical metric marathon) right out there in front of us? Does the stated horizontal distance include the trail run, or is that separate too?

And then there's cycling, with both imperial and metric centuries, neither of which are a hundred years long.

O-maps: no good reason for listing the climb like that.
I calculated them separately and no one ever bothered to add them together.

The "Metric Marathon" name comes from the founder of the race Paul Bennett.
It makes perfect sense, if you take in consideration difficulty of Harriman State Park terrain. If your pavement running pace is 5 min/km, in Harriman on trails same effort gives you ~ 8 min/km on average, hence the length of the the Highlander is 26.2 km. Paul could explain his logic better than me :)
