From the folks at the Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC):

Exercise your orienteering brain cells while complying with our mandate to keep our social distance during this health crisis. Try this virtual orienteering event based on the CityQuest urban event we staged in Cuyahoga Falls for a number of years. Instead of punching a card at a flag, competitors on foot or bike had to answer a question when they arrived at the map circle. We’ve used the Cuyahoga Falls map to create a 14 control course where you answer a question at each location. There are two challenges. First, the map does not have the street names labeled. Second, you must only use Street View on Google Maps or Google Earth to answer the questions! There are prizes for the first five to complete the challenge with no mistakes. To be fair to all, the map and questions will not be live until Saturday, March 21 at 9 am.

I had fun 'running' around Cuyahoga Falls. I think I would have benefited from printing out the map so I could thumb it and orient it in my direction of travel. Perhaps there are lessons to learn by orienteering this way. Now if we could just sneak some flags into view the next time the Google cars are out taking pictures...

Thanks to working with a large monitor I was able to split the screen and place the Google image next to the map image as I moved along both.
But I may have to self DQ. I switched from street view to the 'bird's eye' to move from one control to the next and then back to street view.

I had a lot of fun too (at least once the map was corrected). In retrospect, I should have opened the PDF on a tablet. Not having the map oriented was more difficult than I expected. Having lots of screen real estate was helpful.

Hard to believe how many have completed this already. Sorry for the mistakes I corrected. I had two versions of the map and initially posted the wrong one. Gord! I never dreamed that anyone would stay in Street mode the whole time!!! Birds Eye is fine for traveling between controls. Also Gord, I enjoyed your Florida event I dropped in on. You do and amazing job with the JROTC groups!

During this time of uncertainty, I encourage others with access to campus or urban O maps to create other virtual events like this!

Oh, I thought you were supposed to stay in street view to simulate running... I even went back to the finish....

I thought so too. Wouldn't really simulate orienteering if you can just transport between controls.

Yep, street view was the way to go. Lot's of fun, and thanks for the tour of Cuyahoga Falls. We're looking for activities to tide over our club, and I'll certainly recommend this one!

I think one can do many parts of this course.

Start here: https://goo.gl/maps/DeGhA6vyz2996i166

Definitely have to skip #3 and for some you can only get close (#1, #7, #12, #13).

Air travel is finally affordable. Fares are incredibly low.

This "event' is open thru 3-29 and is very close to BHM,
on a newly-updated map with LIDAR contours. If your covid is still symptom-free why not?
