Discussion: Save the date - GA O-Fest and SEIS 2021

in: GA O-Fest Classics :: Don Carter State Park (Apr 10–11 - Gainesville, GA, US)

CHARLIE-B:
Well, we're going to try to pull off the GA O-Fest on April 9-11. It has been a struggle to get this far, but we have sent the sanctioning request in. We don't have final approval for the 2-Day Classic on 10th and 11th at Don Carter State Park, but at least the application made it past the park manager and has been passed up the line. We will also have a Middle at McIntosh Reserve on April 9th.

We have had 26 days of in-person orienteering without incident since we reopened in May, 2020. Regardless of what happens, we will have 3 days of orienteering on NRE-quality courses and maps.

How/where do we register? :-)

Registration will be available from our website once the event is sanctioned.

CHARLIE-B:
This event has been sanctioned unanimously by the Sanctioning Committee as of this morning.

The following rules were waived:

A.4.1 Application shall be submitted no later than 8 weeks prior to the event
A.7.6 Area shall be closed to competition for 4 months prior to the event
A.6.16 Maps previously used in competition shall be posted at the competition center and sold at the event

These were due to COVID, COVID and COVID. To expand on that, we could not be certain of access to the parks until 4 weeks before the events; due to schedule conflicts Don Carter missed the embargo by a a few days and McIntosh by 10 days; and we don't want to encourage arriving at the park early and/or congregating around maps.

In any case, as a condition of the embargo waiver, we will be posting online print quality jpgs of all the competition maps and courses from December. We will not be mailing any maps, so if you need prints, please print them or have them printed. The prints will cost less than if we mailed them in any case. Just make sure you tell them to print them with no scaling and without "Fit to page" turned on. If you print them at Kinko's/Fedex, they will be of identical quality to the originals.

Registration will open in the next few days.

Unfortunately I have a very important exam on April 8. Otherwise I'd be down there for what is definitely going to be a great event.

Looking forward to seeing the courses!

Yes, thank you for such a fun weekend. It was well worth the drive! Blown away by how beautiful the forests are down south. Will definitely try and make it out there more often :-)

That's the link to the old java RG. Don't know where you got that!

The link on the main web page is to the html version:

which looks OK.

Jan Erik Naess:
Any tips on uploading a GPX route to route gadget?

My issue is I start my GPS quite a bit before the run and it seems like it's quite important to have it down to the second for any sort of a replay... My cropping skills don't seem up to par and it seems a bit much to have to try several times.

Was this a beginner's mistake by me?

The Garmin Connect online app has a tool to delete seconds, or meters, from the beginning and/or end of a file. It’s under the tools drop-down menu. I’m not familiar with any other GPS devices but I would expect there are similar tools for other devices. You need to trim the activity, i.e. your route, before exporting the gpx file. To make this a bit easier I like to start my GPS "exactly" 5 seconds before hitting the Start. But it can be a bit stressful to add one more thing to remember to do at the Start line.
Similarly, if you stop your GPS watch/route *immediately* after finishing, you can trim time from the beginning of your GPS route until the GPS route's total time is the same as your e-stick measured time.

Trim Activity
If you started an activity on your Garmin device too early or ended it too late, don't worry. Trimming your activity lets you remove unwanted portions for a more accurate view of your overall performance.
