Discussion: News from JWOC 2012

in: JWOC 2012 Kosice SLOVAKIA (Jul 7–14, 2012 - Kosice, Slovakia)

7 of the 9 athletes arrived in Kosice, Slovakia yesterday (Nate, Nate, Ethan, Zac, Andrew, Isabel, Meg), along with coach Erin Schirm, Dan Barker and myself. McKenzie and John will join us after WUOC. (JWOC website)

The team will have internet access starting this evening, so you'll be hearing directly from them on the USA team blog.

Yesterday Erin held a team meeting. He talked about representing the USA, and making sure the team members are in a position to race well (sleep, eat...). The goal for this week of training is to get to know the terrain, not to push hard. Having said that, they'll be doing two long trainings today in 90+ degree weather, a hard track workout tomorrow morning to "sharpen their legs", and possibly something strenuous on Wednesday. After that they'll back off. Nate L was interested in getting some good tempo training this week.

Erin encouraged the boys to aim at the B final, and to think of this as a race against each other. Meg and Isabel will focus on having clean races. "Be excited!"

This morning they headed out to training maps Jašteričie jazero and Dievčenská skala. This karst terrain has many large depressions, and a mixture of forest, open land and thicker vegetation.

They are traveling in a rental van with Dan B as their chauffeur. At breakfast they decided that the first stop would be a grocery store, to supplement the meals provided at the accommodations.

Meg is feeling poorly, and will not be training with the team for a few days. Last night she checked into a clinic so they can treat her sore throat and dehydration. The hospital has what I think of as a classic Communist-era eastern European look:

We got there after regular hours with our wonderful JWOC-provided interpreter Katka, who just finished her first year of forestry studies at university. We traveled from doctor to doctor within the hospital building, through darkened hallways, knocking on locked doors, but always finding helpful and competent health care providers in the end. The biggest delays were them figuring out how to deal with billing. We ended up paying cash with the expectation that Meg's insurance will reimburse her. She was given the option of hospital stay or outpatient treatment; they were clear that it would be much more expensive to stay in the hospital. They were right. It's around 100 euros for a night in the hospital, and the pills would just be 12 euros. Some of the paperwork was typed in duplicate using a carbon copy:

I wonder if Meg has ever seen that technology before.

Meg made her decision based on what seemed to give her the best chance of getting well as rapidly as possible.

I got a text from her last night saying she was comfortable and that the nurses were very nice.

In one waiting area as Meg was being checked in, Isabel and I got to see one of the Spanish goals on TV.

Thanks for the news and photos! Erin's plan sounds realistic and focused and the training pace seems appropriate. It sounds like they're in good hands with Erin as coach, you as Team Mom, especially with Meg's need of medical attention, and Dan's chauffeuring to grocery stores and training. We talked a bit about the influence of the communist rule on architecture and I hope the kids are able to see that. The whole concept of Eastern-block countries must seem like ancient history to them, but we parents remember those times well. I wonder if there is any evidence of the recent split between the Czech Republic and Slovakia?
The maps of the karst terrain make me think, "Holey Moley!". Good thing they'll get some practice in it this week. I hope you're all having fun.

When viewing communist architecture, apartment blocks etc, do be aware that they fit a lot of people in cities of small area and with good public transport, so people have access to the town centres and the woods etc. It changes my perspective on how 'ugly' the buildings are.

Best wishes!

MJ Childs: The only difference I really noticed is that in one country they drink Demerovka, and in the other Becherovka, though it tastes just as foul in both :) Something to remember for the party :)

Update on Meg: one more night in the hospital; planning to pick her up at 1pm tomorrow.

Useful information: you don't get water in the hospital here. Your friends/family bring it to you. They'll give you tea, but not water. Fortunately, we figured that out today.
Jul 2, 2012 5:17 PM #
Rosstopher:
It seems to me that in this particular case the water should count as part of the treatment! The irony of checking into a hospital to ostensibly treat dehydration only to find a complete lack of water....

Good luck to the whole team. It's lucky for us avid spectators that you're taking pictures and sharing stories. Thanks, barb!

Several people above have rightfully thanked Barb, and I just wanted to add direct thanks from Elizabeth and I (Meg's parents). Barb has kept us apprised on a near-constant basis, and has handled everything from hospital finance to Slovakian health-term translation to bedside visits. We are truly grateful for all that she has done.

This morning: 15 minute warmup run, then some fast 200s at a track, then warm-down run. Next: some water & food; cool shower to lower body temp; rest until 2:30 when they'll head out for a middle training north of the city.

Andrew & Erin were discussing the fact that it's the last JWOC for Andrew and Nate. Then, on to WOC for a few years, said Erin. Andrew: yeah, or 30 years. Erin: not if I have anything to do with it.

I sure hope we find a way to keep Erin engaged so he can help USOF carry out this vision of building a sustainable pipeline of juniors...

The senior team has been so supportive of the juniors. If they do their mentoring well, they'll have some tough competition, and it might raise their own level of orienteering. I guess true success as mentors will be if they train kids to be good enough to knock them right off the team...
Jul 7, 2012 1:58 PM #
barb:
McKenzie & John have arrived, and joined the team for a sprint training in town. (Not on the embargoed map, of course, but a training map provided by the organizers.) Meg walked some of the map, and that went fine. Isabel woke up in the middle of the night with stomach pains that persisted into the morning, so she sat out the long training this morning, as did Meg and others. In fact, just Zac and Ethan did it. And Erin and Dave. Start lists have been posted for the sprint tomorrow.
Jul 7, 2012 3:59 PM #
bishop22:
Is Meg sitting out the Sprint? I don't see her name on the start list.
Jul 7, 2012 4:51 PM #
schirminator:
Meg will sit out the sprint and long and we will test out her legs on the middle Model. She is going to be entered in the middle qualifier, and we will see about the final. I would like the girls to have a relay team and meg also has a few more weeks of travel to go after JWOC and a few more JWOC's so we are not going to push this one.

I see that World of O has a link to a "live results" page, with radio controls. But the distances for the men and women appear to be reversed as of right now.
Jul 8, 2012 11:32 AM #
bishop22:
They've already changed the format of the page (and removed distances - which appeared to be 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.0, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9). The first time from a new computer it still goes to the old page, so who knows what you'll see at that link.

And as I type the JWOC Sprint item has disappeared from the menu, and come back, so they are definitely tweaking things...

Nice run by Izzy! Is this the first time she's orienteered in Europe? Also, seems like a very good run for Ethan. I assume he and Izzy are among the youngest ones there?
Jul 9, 2012 6:49 PM #
barb:
According to the team member bios, Zac, Ethan and Meg were all born in 1994. I think Zac has one more year of high school, while Ethan & Meg are heading to college. Isabel was born in 1997. And, according to that same page :-), Isabel has orienteered at the Scottish 6-day twice and then last November in the Venice street-O. And, because it is linked on that bio page and thus I am reminded of it, I suppose I might as well put in a plug here for David's cartoon about the time he shadowed her on a white-equivalent course in Scotland back in 2005...

Yeah, Isabel had solid runs today and yesterday. Going into it I didn't know if she could handle these races (other than the sprint). Here's what she will be posting on the team blog:

"Today was the long distance race. I have done very few long courses in the past. I ran the billygoat a few years ago and a lowlander last year, but few 'normal' length long courses. Therefore, I was really worried going in to this race. I was mainly anxious because I had no clue what pace to set for myself. Starting out I was going pretty slowly to adjust to the terrain and scale and to hit control one cleanly. After that, my pace fluctuated much more than I would have liked. I had many mistakes, especially in the field part of the map, but I finished so I've decided it was successful!"

From Ethan:

Middle Qualifier:
I went into the race with the intention of taking the first control or two easy, so I could get into the map. Instead I ran fairly hard on them, and got lucky when stumbled across my first two. The rest of the course I did more or less intentionally, but I had some bad routes. Unlike the training maps, this map went through many fields, almost all of which were densely filled with young trees and nettle, making it very slow. I feel like I could have saved time by taking routes around these areas, but I still managed to do well despite. I could have saved two or three minutes on the course, but I'm still very happy with my result.

Middle Final:
I intended to take the first couple of controls easy, like I had intended yesterday, but today I actually managed to do that. I still ran hard, but I made certain I was in close intact with the map at all times. After a couple of controls, I got into it and was able to run harder. At control fourteen, I read ahead to control fifteen, and thought I was about to enter the spectator chute and was very confused when I never saw it. Eventually I realized I still had to punch fifteen, so I lost about thirty seconds there. The control after the spectator leg was also shaky, and I ended up running up a hill to a control which I wasn't sure was mine. Turns out it was, and the last couple of controls went very well. Once again, very happy with my race.

Relay:
This was possibly the best race of my life. Granted, I could follow people to controls which certainly saved some time, but it was still a solid race. I was in the zone the whole time, and I paced myself so that I was very tired when I finished, but still able to finish strongly. The entire course was either up, down, or contouring one of several large hills, but my training this spring prepared me well for the task. I was able to keep up with some very good runners, and I finished just less than three minutes behind the top time (which was 30:49. I was 33:47) on a five kilometer plus course. It was a terrific race to end this year's JWOC.
