Some of have already registered for the US Nationals this fall and some of you are probably considering staying the week after and going to the North American Champs in Ottawa the next weekend. This is a great time of year to be in Western New York. The weather is generally still mild and the hardwood trees will be starting to change colors.
The drive from Rochester to Ottawa is about 41/2 hours on nice expressways with beautiful scenery along the way. Make sure you have a valid passport to cross the border. Here are some suggestions for your trip. Please contact us if you have any questions. wornerkohn@aol.com
1. Do so more orienteering on permanent courses at Letchworth West and Mendon Ponds Park. We will have copies at registration.
2. Explore Rochester’s diverse neighborhoods and small parks with a copy of the 2014 Rochester Map Adventure. This will give you up to 8 hours of trying to find interesting historical points and landmarks throughout the city. Copies at registration.
3. Visit The Strong Museum of Play showcasing the history of games in America,

4. Do some rock climbing at Rock Ventures.

5.Take a car or bike tour of the Finger Lakes region. Each lake has a wine/beer trail and many parks with limestone gorges to explore. Towns like Ithaca, Naples and Hammondsport have lots of restaurants and small shops to visit.

6.Hike a section or two of the 500 mile long Finger Lakes Trail. One section even passes through the Letchworth East map. You will see numerous waterfalls and beautiful fall colors.

7. Climb to the top of Bristol Mountain for a view of the entire Finger Lakes area. You can take the chair lift if you only want to go one way.

8. Take a day trip to Niagara Falls and catch an afternoon play at the World famous Shaw Festival at Niagara On The Lake.

9. Visit the Corning Museum of Glass. Corning has made special glass and ceramics for many of the NASA missions. Corning also has a Norman Rockwell Art Museum.

10. On your way to Ottawa (about 4 1⁄2 hours) stop in the famous Thousand Island Region on the border and take a boat tour on the St. Lawrence River with its crystal clear waters and impressive granite islands. We recommend Rockport as the best starting point. It is just three miles east of the Route 81 bridge on the Canadian side.

Save a couple of days for your visit to Ottawa. It is an amazing small city that is easy and safe to walk. Visit the Parliament, Art Gallery and the Museum of Civilization or take a run along the
Rideau Canal. The Gatineau Park is just north of the city and offers hundreds of miles of great hiking and jogging trails.
