Jukola 2008
Tampere/Pirkkala, Finland
Jun 14-15, 2008
Type: Orienteering - Other
Info: From the website:
This is the 60th Jukola Relay and the 31st Venla Relay.
Runnable commercial forest
The competition area of Tampere Jukola is runnable commercial forest. There is not much vegetation or recent forest thinning work along the courses, describes the Course Coordinator Jari Kymäläinen from Tampereen Pyrintö the typical terrain in Häme.
- Although the forest allows fast running, the visibility is not the best in all parts of it. This allows a good opportunity to take a full advantage of even a short lead.
The very variable competition area consists of young commercial forest, rocky hills, heaths and old spruce woods.
Kymäläinen tells, that in particular the longer courses of Jukola are fairly hilly.
- The night legs of Tampere Jukola are challenging, and the ten best teams will most likely be taking their places after the 4th leg.
- Also the Venla Relay will be won by orienteering, not by running.
The assembly area of Tampere Jukola is in the aviation and motor sports center in Kaanaa, the same site as in 1986. It is located east of Lake Näsijärvi, some 50 km north of Tampere city center.
It is easy to reach Tampere. It is only 176 kilometers away from Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and 157 kilometers away from Turku, the second largest port in Finland. There are excellent train and flight connections to Tampere. There are direct flights to Tampere-Pirkkala Airport from Stockholm, Copenhagen, Riga, Frankfurt, London, Liverpool, Dublin and Bremen. By using connecting flights via Helsinki, Tampere can be easily reached from all over the world.
