Type: Orienteering - Local

City Spree is a creation of City of Play, a group that creates outdoor events and games, often using games that have been played hundreds of years ago and whose rules are documented in old books.
City Spree is a map-based urban Score-O, in which participants have 2 hours to find as many checkpoints as possible. The map is a color print of Google maps, laminated in semi-rigid transparent plastic sheet. At the checkpoint location, there will be a bright color (magenta? ) large poster-size paper sheet hanging, and at its location, there will be a code written somewhere, specific to that checkpoint, and which the participant will have to text (SMS) via mobile phone to the event phone number. (Sounds cumbersome, i know, but that is how non-orienteers came up with it, still a good effort...). But here is the twist: the checkpoint score value VARIES according to the number of times that specific checkpoint was found by all participants. The lesser visitations a checkpoint gets, the more value it has.
The event even made the weekend event short list of the
local paper. When does that happen for an orienteering event.
Last year's photos.
The event is thirty bucks per person. Use the code EMAIL at registration to get five bucks off.
Money collected goes into a inner-city greening project.
