For the first time, North Park will be used as a meet location by the Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club. First use map. A collectible. Come and join us on this special day, Saturday Sept 10. Orienteering is an outdoor activity or sport in which participants find and locate checkpoint flags in the woods using a detailed special-purpose topographic map and compass. Participants start at staggered times two minutes apart so that one doesn't follow the other. It is a timed event, so if those that are bent into a competitive flaire, they may do a course running it trying to best their time among all others. Otherwise slow pokes and non-competitive folks can simply walk it at a recreational pace. The activity attracts all sorts of people: young and old, men and women, runners and walkers, Often described it as the "thinking sport", it involves both a physical and mental aspect.

Cost of participation is $6/map. Group or family can purchase a single map for use by the entire group, and cost is still just $6 for the entire group.

There will be four courses offered, which differ in length and difficulty: Novice, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced. While particpants can register and start anytime between 10:45 AM and 2 PM, come in early if your intent is to try more than one course. Everyone must be back by 3:30, time in which the courses close and event is over.

Beginner instruction on site by volunteers.
Compass loaners avaiilable for those that don't have one.

The registration and start will be at the Grant Shelter, near the intersection of Babcock and Wildwood, on the SE corner of the lake.

If you are bringing minors that are not yours or under your tutelage, they will require an authorization by parent or guardian, of which form can be downloaded from the website See you there
