The fall season of orienteering begins for WPOC (Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club) on August 21 at Yellow Creek State Park (South side). Al Sheaffer, meet director, has designed five courses for you: a Beginner (White) at 2.2 km, a Novice (Yellow) at 3.2 km, an Intermediate (Orange) at 4.8 km, an Advanced Short (Brown) at 3.8 km and an Advanced Long (Red) at 7.1 km. All courses will use electronic punching. Registration and start are from 10:45 am to 2 pm with the usual map fee of $5 for members and $6 for non-members. We will be at the Woodland Pavilion.
Don't forget, if you are bringing a minor who is not your son or daughter, you need to bring a waiver signed by the minor's parent (obtainable under Club Documents at www.wpoc.org ). To reach the south shore of Yellow Creek State Park (the Day Use Area): From the junction of US 422 and the north end of PA 259 (8 miles east of Indiana), take route 259 south about one mile to the Day Use Area. Turn right and follow the red and white orienteering signs to parking near the Woodland Pavilion.
Orienteering is an outdoor activity popular in Scandinavian and Eastern European countries. Given a detailed topographic map, the participants locates checkpoints marked with flags in the woods and general outdoors. It is a merge of physical and mental activity. Beginners instruction available on site by volunteers. Compass loaners are also available for free.
Not a mass start, but staggered individual starts. You can register and start anytime between 11 AM and 2 PM. Everybody must be back by 3:30 when courses close and event is over.
