The Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club is hosting a map and compass orienteering meet in Frick Park on Sunday, September 22, 2019, with starting location at the Falls Ravine shelter ("lower Frick").

Orienteering is an outdoor sport/activity in which participants locate and find checkpoint flags in the woods by using solely a specially-designed topographical map and a compass. No electronic devices nor GPS devices are used.

In this meet, participants will have a maximum of 90 minutes to find as many checkpoints as possible. It is up to the participant to decide where to go and in which direction to go. This is not a pre-defined course. Strategy plays a key part in how to optimize time and terrain covered.

You will not need to bring a compass, since the club has many compass that can be loaned, but if you already own a compass , bring it.

You will need a device that tells the time, since this is a time-delimited event (90 minutes), and after which, the participant is assessed a point penalty for each minute in overtime. So bring a mobile phone or a watch.

Each checkpoint flag is equipped with a paper puncher that leaves a specific and distinctive hole pattern on the control card. That is how it can be proved that the participant has indeed found that specific checkpoint. For each checkpoint found, a point score associated with that checkpoint is added to the final tally. The closest checkpoints have low points, while the ones more far away have more points.

The participant can do the event at a leisure and recreational pace, or can do it competitively and do it running, as in a race. The sport is open to young and old, men and women, beginners and advanced, rain or shine.

If you want to participate in the event with the company of your dog or pet, you can. We just ask that you abide by city rules and regulations that apply in city public parks.

Cost of participation is $6/map. If a group or family is doing the event together with just a single purchased map, cost of participation for the entire group/family is still just $6.

There is no mass start. The registrations and starts are staggered from 10:45 AM to 2 PM, whenever the participant wants to start. The event closes at 3:30, and it is expected that every participant be finished by that time. It is important that participants always return to the start/finish, so that the organizers know that there are no participants still out there in the woods (in other words, if the participants decides to quit the event, don't just return to your vehicle and leave, but inform the organizers that you are finished).

Minors that are not in company of their parents or legal guardians will require a pre-authorization, printed and signed, whose form can be found in the club's website, "Orienteering Events" ---> "Waivers for Minors".

The color topographic map of Frick Park that you purchased for participating in this event is yours to keep. No need to return it.

The Falls Ravine shelter has a port-a-john toilet facility, and a drinking water fountain nearby. The GPS coordinates of the shelter are: 40.433153, -79.900313

The event is completely made possible by the time of volunteers. No one is paid for their time. There is staff for setup, tear-down, registration, start, finish, and for basic instruction for newbies.

Hope to see you at the event.
