LOC Tech race #4 - Claiffe North
Really enjoyed the first 10 controls. Made a couple of 20/30 seconders but no big blunders. Head was in the game. Then we got to the classic lakes steep sided craggy bouldery mess. 11 I'm sure was too far down the slope, anyway saw it from a distance so only a minute lost. Then 12 was a classic nemesis control site, vague platform on a steep vague slope that turns slight misses into massive faffy nightmares. Bumbled around for a bit and then hit the control, 1m30 lost. Then more faffing on the steep slopes dropping down at pace losing another 30 seconds being too scared to overshoot. Concentrated on compass on 14 and nailed it, woo. Then to 15.
Where to start with 15. I had a good line, back over the top of 12 and then up and over the steeper section of slope and over the big boy crag then contoured round to where I thought the control would be. As I got there the map just didn't really fit. Crags absolutely everywhere. Our control site was meant to be the highest of the crags. Saw Rebekah Beadle looking confused and then a couple more searching below. I circled the area. And then again. I went high and found the path. Found out where I was and bearing back down. Nope, still not there. Then came Phil, oh balls even Phil has caught me up. We looked for a bit more. Then came John Ockenden. Eventually about 12 of us were circling the area. Nothing fit. We were just about to give up when we heard a yell from below from Rebekah. Jesus Christ, what a palava. Then I reluctantly lead the herd through the green and the last 3 controls to the finish.
The winsplits make for good viewing: http://obasen.orientering.se/winsplits/online/en/d...
The fastest time from 14-15 was 5:08 by Bilbo. The next was Tom Gibbs who from the splits was following. Then the third fastest time was 9:19! I wasn't quite the slowest but I did manage to double my running time.
