Wales 3 Peaks Trials with Patsy (last time we did it was in 2016), and Patsy's friend Kate and her daughter Jemima.
Headed off from Abergavenny Guide hall with our fabian4 checkpoint watches on, in lovely sunshine. Kate was slow once we got into ascending through the woods at the foot of Blorenge so we waited a few times for her to catch up. Blorenge was probably the hardest climb of the day - 1500ft in one mile. Eventually got to the Blorenge plateau and waited for them to appear. All of a sudden we were in a snow storm. Jackets hurriedly donned and we carried on over the rocky ground to the trig point CP1. Kate again held us up by putting on overtrousers over her walking trousers which were a bit of a tight fit. Descended Blorenge in a hailstorm and, as we approached the edge of the woods, Kate needed a comfort break (more faffing with the trousers!). Patsy and I continued down into the village and waited for K & J to join us. They then decided to stop for raspberry croissants. :-/ Patience starting to get tested I decided P and I would carry on and we had an enjoyable sunny walk along the Usk Valley canal. Got to CP2 in Gilwern and waited for K&J to appear. They decided to have a sandwich so we politely waited...
All headed off for Sugar Loaf together but again we lost them shortly after starting to ascend on the farm track. The sun was fully out again and Patsy and I carried on to the summit CP3. K&J nowhere to be seen so Patsy decided we should carry on and let them do their own thing. Glad we did because by the time we got down to the wall at Cefn Minog another hailstorm hit us. Got down to CP4 at the pub in Pantygelly when the sun came out. Sat on the wall and had our cheese roll. Headed across the fields and up a long road to the foot of Skirrid CP5. Last bit of ascent was hard as it was near vertical and the ground was slippery, the strong westerly nearly took me off my feet a couple of times. Reached the summit CP6 in the sunshine and, feeling well happy with ourselves, we started dreaming of the tea and my home-made cake waiting for us back at Kate's. Carried on the long descent and then the walk into Skirrid.
Got in touch with K&J, they were only just coming off Skirrid when we were having a cuppa in the Guide Hall so we left them to it and drove back to Kate's. Thankfully we took two cars.
I was 109 out of 313 finishers and 3rd out of 13 in FV60 so happy with that for a pleasant day hiking in the mountains.
Overall we felt pretty good, yes the steep climbs were tough but I think we could have run down some of the descents if we'd a mind to do so, but it wasn’t a race as far as we were concerned. It was just nice to have some lovely views from each summit this time round, and be able take lots of photos.
New boots were great and wearing gaiters was a really good decision. Body felt a little tired fro a couple of days and I did hurt my shoulder when I tried to steady myself from being blown off the steep face of Skirrid. Other than that, all good. The other four of the Seven Sisters of the Black Mountains of Abergavenny to be knocked off another time, just for fun!
